Job Overview

Supporting the Security & Healthcare Services Manager in the delivery of a robust cost‑effective security. This role includes protecting staff, patients and visitors, engaging with patients displaying challenging behaviour, undertaking initial investigations of thefts and other security incidents, providing crime prevention and remedial security advice, line managing Security Officers, establishing relationships with police and criminal justice services, and advising senior colleagues and external contractors on security matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Protecting staff, patients and visitors from acts of violence and abuse, ensuring wherever possible evidence is gathered and preserved to secure a conviction of offenders.
  • Engage directly with patients displaying challenging behaviour on occasion.
  • Undertake initial investigations of thefts and other security incidents across the Trust and provide crime prevention & remedial security advice to victims of crime and ward/department managers.
  • Provide line management to Security Officers.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with police and criminal justice services.
  • Advise and support senior colleagues and external contractors on security matters.

As a Security Team Leader, you will play a key role in maintaining the safety and security of the hospital while supporting essential services. Your duties include monitoring site security, producing security reports, assisting with patient movement and portering tasks when available, supporting car‑parking operations, and completing a variety of reception/administrative tasks for the General Office.

Harrogate Integrated Facilities (HIF) is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Harrogate and District Foundation Trust (HDFT). HIF supplies services to the hospital and community services with respect to Maintenance, Sterile Services, Portering, Catering, Equipment Library, Linen and Sewing Room, Security, Car Parking, General Office, Front Desk, Reception, Waste Management, Courier Services, Security Services and Domestics.

Additional Duties

  • Communicate with patients and visitors who may be violent, distressed or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Deal with sensitive issues and empathetically support staff with complex and highly emotive issues as a result of violent physical assaults.
  • Ensure all relevant incident information is logged, recorded, and handed over before end of shift.
  • Support and provide information to staff in relation to violent or distressed patients.
  • Provide and receive confidential information relating to the care of patients, workforce issues and political imperatives.
  • Give directions and advice to patients and visitors across the Trust sites.
  • Greet and assist all service users in a friendly and helpful manner, promoting and maintaining good communication networks with all service user groups.
  • Liaise with the Security & Healthcare Services Manager to resolve any issues that may arise during their shift and make decisions as appropriate.
  • Promote good communication at all times with all service user groups and colleagues across the Trust.
  • Operate and answer the communication device (radio or telephone) issued to staff in a courteous manner and action requests.

Analytical/Judgement Skills

Be able to make judgments of situations, some of which may be complicated and/or require an immediate response. Consider the wider situation and impact when making decisions. Review and respond accordingly to information handed over from other security staff, Heads of Departments, Ward Staff, and escale to the appropriate person or team if required. Instigate police response to any suspicious incidents or offences.

Planning/Organisational Skills

Be responsible for the prompt receipt and allocation of security work requests received via telephone, email or in person from service users. Prioritise workload to ensure the department fulfills its obligations to the user. Plan and organise straightforward activities to reduce and/or prevent incidents and criminal activity, including responding to requests for assistance from wards and departments, protecting property, protecting patients, staff, contractors and visitors against acts of violence, aggression and abuse, asking trespassers to leave, challenging any person on site as to their business out of hours, and accurately recording any delays that may occur when Security staff are undertaking a task.

Physical Skills

Understand and adhere to safe working practices at all times in accordance with the relevant legal framework and departmental and Trust health and safety guidelines. Support Department Teams in managing incidents of escalated behaviour due to acute distress and challenging behaviour. Use physical skills on a daily basis throughout the shift to ensure safety of patients, staff and visitors. The skill level required is advanced and requires specific training in de‑escalation and physical intervention.

Patient/Visitor Care

Ensure relevant wards/department staff are aware of any security alerts and provide advice as required. Check and monitor patient lists for patients and visitors entering maternity wards and the delivery suite. Assist clinical staff to complete patient and security documentation as and when required to support patient and staff safety.
