The Band 5 Medical Engineer is responsible for delivering planned preventative maintenance, calibration, acceptance testing, and repair of a wide range of medical devices, ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable, and fit for clinical use. The post holder will support the effective management of the Trust's medical device inventory through accurate and timely recording of all maintenance activity within the asset management system. They will work closely with clinical teams to facilitate access to equipment, provide guidance on safe operation, and support the timely return of devices to service. The post holder will develop technical competence across multiple equipment types while contributing to the delivery of maintenance programmes and service improvement initiatives. They will also support departmental governance processes, including audit, compliance monitoring, and adherence to relevant regulatory and safety standards.

Main duties of the job:

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair, and calibration of a wide range of medical devices to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Undertake commissioning and acceptance testing of new medical equipment, verifying compliance with safety standards prior to clinical use.
  • Provide technical advice and support to clinical users, promoting the safe, effective, and appropriate use of medical devices.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Significant experience in maintenance and repair of medical devices.
  • Knowledge of analogue, digital, computer and mechanical systems.
  • Experience working in a hospital Medical Engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of equipment management systems.
  • Experience of procurement advice, equipment replacement planning and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.

Education and Training:

  • Appropriate level of training and qualification in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Manufacturer-approved training.
  • Registered Clinical Technologist or equivalent professional registration.
