We are working with a leading independent girls’ school in Winchester to recruit a Head of Design and Technology. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Design & Technology teacher to lead an established department within a high-achieving senior school. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall delivery of the D&T curriculum across Key Stage 3, GCSE/IGCSE and A Level, while promoting high standards of teaching, learning, assessment and pupil achievement.

The department currently delivers Design and Technology to all students at Key Stage 3, Cambridge International IGCSE Resistant Materials at GCSE level, and AQA Product Design at A Level. Students develop practical manufacturing skills, CAD/CAM, design evaluation, problem-solving and project-based learning through both individual and collaborative work.

The Head of DT will provide professional leadership for the department, manage curriculum planning and assessment, monitor standards, oversee health and safety, support colleagues, manage resources effectively and promote the subject through open days, competitions and wider school events. The department benefits from generous specialist facilities, technician support and a strong co-curricular culture, including involvement in design and engineering competitions such as Greenpower electric car racing.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Strong Design & Technology teaching experience
  • Experience teaching Product Design, Resistant Materials and/or related DT specialisms
  • Confidence teaching across KS3, GCSE/IGCSE and A Level
  • A relevant teaching qualification, QTS or willingness to work towards this
  • Strong workshop practice and health & safety awareness
  • Experience with CAD/CAM and practical project work
  • The ability to lead, inspire and develop a successful department
  • Strong communication, organisation and curriculum planning skills

Previous Head of Department, subject leadership or second-in-department experience would be highly desirable, although applications may also be considered from experienced DT teachers ready to step into leadership.
