Harris Academy Orpington opened in September 2016, joining the highly successful Federation of Harris academies in London. We are a community school that serves families in and around Orpington and we are well on our way towards providing an outstanding education for the students who come here. We want our students to succeed and have choices in their lives; to take control of their futures and achieve beyond their dreams. Our work as a Health Science Specialist school, with students being given access to recognised professional qualifications, work experience and careers is unique and is designed to help and support the whole community who are regularly invited into the Academy to hear from guest speakers.

We are currently looking to appoint a qualified, experienced teacher to join our academy as a part-time Teacher in charge of Religious Studies and PSHE, to ensure high standards of teaching and learning. The ability to teach social sciences, such as sociology and psychology, is welcome and will form part of the role. As the PSHE Lead, you will work collaboratively with staff to foster students’ wellbeing, emotional resilience, and social responsibility. This post requires an innovative and proactive educator who is committed to developing a high-quality curriculum that aligns with our school’s strategic goals and ethos and values. This post is for a three-day working week, currently Wednesday - Friday.
MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- To establish and be accountable for outstanding provision within the subject area.
- To be accountable for student progress and development in the subject area across all relevant Key Stages.
- To ensure high standards of teaching and learning across the subject area.
- To ensure the provision of an appropriately engaging, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students in the subject area.
- To ensure that all school policies and procedures are implemented and applied consistently by all colleagues in the subject area.
- To effectively and efficiently manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources across the subject area.
- To lead development for literacy, within subject area, to raise standards of Literacy across the Academy.
- To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth.
- To formulate, in conjunction with the subject team, an annual subject improvement plan (SIP) which supports the academy improvement plan (AIP).
- To lead on the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, schemes of work, marking and assessment policies and teaching and learning strategies.
- To ensure that Health and Safety policies and practices are in-line with national requirements.
- To use the specialism materials available to develop a comprehensive assessment methodology for PSHE learning.
- Oversee and coordinate the delivery of PSHE across all Key Stages.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR
- Hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree.
- Have a minimum of one year's teaching experience.
- Have proven success in raising achievement.
- Show a high level of ICT skills and experience of how new technologies can be used to raise achievement.
- Have recent experience of involvement in innovative curriculum development.
- Show good understanding of creative whole school strategies for improving literacy and numeracy.
- Have experience of embedding innovative strategies for Assessment for Learning and Learning to Learn.
- Be willing to use coaching as a model for ensuring ongoing professional development.
- Have a proven ability to identify and implement strategies to raise standards of Teaching and Learning.
