Responsibilities
- Ensure the provision of a safe, clean, and attractive learning environment as part of a team responsible for the maintenance, security, health and safety of the school site.
- Ensure adherence to the academy health and safety policy, remain vigilant for hazards, mitigate risk immediately and appropriately, and report issues as soon as possible.
- Carry out servicing, cleaning, and checking of academy vehicles within your capabilities.
- Provide technical and craft support to teaching staff.
- Provide site security as required.
- Report poor or dangerous behaviour by students or any potentially hazardous actions by staff.
- Maintain, decorate, and repair the academy premises where appropriate.
- Liaise with and support external contractors on site, ensuring supervision at all times.
- Maintain the academy grounds, keep the site clear of litter, and empty bins regularly.
- Monitor the toilets for cleanliness and replenish supplies as necessary.
- Tour the academy regularly, keeping corridors free from litter.
- Assist in maintaining the academy grounds.
- Lock and secure gates as required.
- Assist in the removal of furniture for exams and academy events.
- Report any lights that need replacing, graffiti, or any broken fixtures and fittings.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and requirements.
- Basic training in one or more of plumbing, general and ground maintenance, electrical/building maintenance, or heating systems (or sound experience of the same).
- Basic knowledge of the operation of heating, ventilating systems and common causes of malfunctions.
- Knowledge of maintenance and security systems and procedures.
- Knowledge of supervisory skills.
- Understanding of appropriate cleaning methods and standards.
- Experience of working in an inner‑city school or educational establishment with children and young people.
- Considerable DIY experience and skills.
- Ability for some heavy lifting, with physical fitness appropriate to tasks required.
- Ability to monitor and report on structural faults/repairs.
- Ability to monitor and order stocks of material.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
- Ability to deal with emergencies occurring outside normal working hours.
