Role summary

We are seeking a motivated Field Service Engineer to join our service team. You will deliver installations, maintenance, fault diagnosis and customer training for laboratory and diagnostic instrumentation. The role is field-based and involves regular travel to customer sites within your assigned region (Home counties).

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, commission and validate laboratory and diagnostic instruments at customer sites.

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), calibration and safety checks.

  • Rapidly diagnose and repair electrical, electronic and mechanical faults to minimise customer downtime.

  • Provide clear on-site and remote technical support and guidance to customers and colleagues.

  • Produce accurate service reports, maintain job records and update the service management system in a timely manner.

  • Support product rollouts, upgrades and customer training sessions when required.

  • Work to company policies and statutory/regulatory standards (health & safety, quality management).

  • Liaise with engineering, sales and spare-parts teams to ensure effective resolution of customer issues.

Experience

  • HNC/HND, BTEC, apprenticeship or degree-level qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Biomedical engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proven experience as a field service or maintenance engineer — ideally with laboratory, diagnostic, medical or scientific instrumentation.

  • Strong fault-finding and practical repair skills across electrical, electronic and mechanical systems.

  • Good IT skills, including the ability to use diagnostic software, basic networking and remote-access tools.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a customer-focused attitude.

  • Able to work independently, manage a schedule of site visits and travel extensively across the UK.

  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Experience with automated microbiology, clinical diagnostics or laboratory automation systems.

  • Knowledge of regulatory standards such as ISO 13485, GMP or equivalent.

  • Experience with calibration procedures and validation documentation.

  • Experience using a Field Service Management system (FSM) or CRM.
