You will ensure the structural integrity and safety of major railway projects.

You will install, calibrate, and maintain advanced geotechnical and structural monitoring systems across tunnels, bridges, portals, shafts, and other railway assets.

Your role will involve collecting and interpreting high-precision data from instruments such as load cells, strain gauges, inclinometers, and piezometers to monitor ground movement, structural stress, and water pressure.

These insights support proactive risk management and compliance with railway safety standards.

The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and experience working in challenging site conditions, collaborating with project teams to guide construction decisions and asset performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain monitoring instruments which includes Load Cells, Strain Gauges, Rod Settlement Plates, In-Place Inclinometers, Piezometers, LVDT’s and Tilt sensors.
  • Conduct monitoring on railway structures such as bridges and viaducts, tunnels and portals and shafts and underground works.
  • Perform calibration and verification of sensors to ensure data accuracy.
  • Collect, process, and analyse monitoring data for structural and geotechnical performance.
  • Prepare technical reports and summaries for project stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with monitoring equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and health & safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to integrate monitoring solutions into project workflows.

  • Be willing to travel to various projects around the UK
  • Able to attend the Telford office 2 days a week

Person Specification

  • Proven experience in geotechnical or structural monitoring on civil engineering projects.
  • Hands-on experience with load cells for force measurement, strain gauges for stress/strain analysis, rod settlement plates for ground movement monitoring, In-place inclinometers for lateral displacement measurement and piezometers for pore water pressure monitoring.
  • Experience working on railway infrastructure projects (tunnels, bridges, shafts).
  • Strong understanding of data acquisition systems and sensor calibration.
  • Ability to interpret monitoring data and provide actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and data visualization tools; familiarity with specialized monitoring software is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting and stakeholder engagement.

Desirable Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in monitoring instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards in construction and railway environments.
  • Good Documentation capabilities, shift reports, project / site notes, data input and client email liaison.
  • Ability to work in reactive site conditions.
  • Flexible working patterns; that is conducive to the business needs and requirements of the projects.
  • Experience with automated monitoring systems and remote data acquisition
