About the role

This is a two-year fixed-term training contract offering a unique opportunity to undertake at least three seats within Legal Services. Throughout the programme, you will gain hands-on experience across a broad spectrum of both contentious and non-contentious legal work, providing you with a deeper insight into the legal profession and the vital role it plays within local government. You will be exposed to the diverse range of legal services delivered by the council, including property and planning, social care, litigation, contracts and procurement, governance and education.

Working under the guidance of experienced solicitors, you will manage a varied caseload of local government matters, allowing you to develop core legal competencies in a supportive and collaborative environment. This includes building expertise in case management, legal research, drafting, advocacy, problem solving, client care, and effective communication. The contract is designed to equip you with the practical skills, professional confidence, and sector-specific knowledge needed to thrive in a career in public sector law.

About the team

Legal Services at Haringey Council is a dynamic and well-structured department led by a Director of Legal Services. Reporting to the Director is the Head of Legal Services, who oversees a team of nine Principal Lawyers, each specialising in distinct areas of law. These Principal Lawyers will be your primary points of contact and support throughout your training, offering expert guidance and mentoring to help you develop your legal skills and professional confidence.

While you will work closely with the Principal Lawyers, you will also interact daily with a wider network of legal professionals across the service. This collaborative setting will allow you to build strong working relationships, gain exposure to different perspectives, and understand how legal services operate within a local government context.

About you

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual who has successfully completed either the Legal Practice Course or both parts of the Solicitors Qualifying Exams, and who is genuinely committed to building a career in Local Government law. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with ambition, drive, and a proactive mindset to take their first steps into a rewarding and impactful legal career.

We are looking for someone who not only demonstrates excellent communication skills and a sharp eye for detail but also shows a genuine eagerness to take ownership of their work and embrace new challenges.
