About the role

As Clerk of Works, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality, safety and compliance of capital works delivered to the council’s housing stock. Acting on behalf of the council, you will inspect works on site, monitor contractor performance and ensure that construction, refurbishment and improvement works meet required standards, specifications and regulatory requirements.

You will work across a range of capital programmes, including planned maintenance, major works, fire safety and energy efficiency projects. Your role will be to provide independent assurance that works are carried out safely, to a high standard and with appropriate consideration for residents living in their homes during construction activity.

You will identify defects, non‑compliance and health and safety issues early, working proactively with project managers, contractors and resident‑facing teams to ensure issues are addressed promptly and effectively.

About the team

You will be part of the Housing and Asset Management function, supporting the delivery of significant capital investment programmes across the housing portfolio. The Clerk of Works function plays a vital role in protecting asset quality, resident safety and value for money.

You will work closely with project managers, contract administrators, resident liaison officers and health and safety colleagues, providing technical input and on‑site oversight across multiple programmes and locations.

About you

You are an experienced construction or building professional with a strong background in inspecting works on site, ideally within social housing or occupied residential environments. You have a detailed understanding of building standards, specifications, health and safety requirements and good practice in construction delivery.

You are confident carrying out site inspections, recording findings accurately and challenging poor workmanship or unsafe practices. You have a sharp eye for detail and the confidence to raise issues clearly and professionally with contractors and project teams.

You are organised, methodical and able to manage multiple sites and priorities. You understand the importance of minimising disruption to residents and working respectfully in occupied homes, and you are committed to equality, safety and high standards of workmanship.

A relevant technical qualification or professional accreditation is desirable, but your practical experience, independence and commitment to quality are what matter most.
