Position: British Sign Language and Deaf Studies Tutor

Salary: SO1, Spinal point 23

Hours of work: Part Time (19.5 hours per week) considered – Term Time Only

Contract Term: Permanent

Blanche Nevile School is a well‑known and highly regarded School for Deaf students, established in 1895. We provide an innovative, inclusive provision for deaf children aged 3‑16. The secondary and primary schools are co‑located with Fortismere School and Highgate Primary respectively. The role involves teaching at both sites and offers a small‑class, specialist BSL and Deaf Studies curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver and assess a high‑quality British Sign Language curriculum up to Level 4 or higher for deaf and hearing pupils, parents and staff.
  • Deliver Deaf Studies lessons in line with the Deaf Studies Curriculum.
  • Work collaboratively with a team of deaf and hearing staff, families and professionals.
  • Maintain a commitment to a child‑centred sign bilingual approach and inclusion in all activities.

Qualifications

  • Excellent planning, organisation and adaptive teaching skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with deaf and hearing learners, families and professionals.
  • Qualification to teach Signature Level 1 to 4 or higher.
  • Energy, enthusiasm and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Availability to work up to 6:00 pm on some evenings.
  • Experience teaching and formally assessing BSL across a range of levels and age groups.
  • Familiarity with formal assessments and DCAL assessment.
  • Understanding of the language and communication needs of deaf children and young people.
