Reports to: Head of Purchasing / Senior Buyer
Working Pattern: Full-time (flexibility required due to market hours)
Role Purpose
To support the purchasing of fresh fruit and vegetables, ensuring availability, quality, and competitive pricing. This role works closely with suppliers, warehouse teams, and sales to keep stock fresh, profitable, and aligned with customer demand.
Duties
- Assist with daily purchasing of fresh produce in line with sales demand and stock levels
- Place and track orders with approved suppliers
- Monitor market prices, availability, and seasonal trends
- Liaise with suppliers on pricing, quality, delivery times, and shortages
- Check deliveries against orders and report quality or quantity issues
- Maintain accurate purchasing records, pricing, and supplier details
- Work closely with warehouse teams to manage stock rotation and reduce waste
- Support promotions and offer-led buying activity
- Ensure compliance with food safety, traceability, and quality standards
- Produce basic reports on costs, margins, and stock performance
Skills & Experience
- Experience in food wholesale, fresh produce, or buying (preferred but not essential)
- Strong numerical and organisational skills
- Commercial awareness and interest in market pricing
- Confident communication with suppliers and internal teams
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-moving environment
Personal Attributes
- Detail-oriented and commercially minded
- Proactive and eager to learn
- Reliable, organised, and methodical
- Comfortable working early mornings when required
