A vacancy has arisen for a Planning Engineer to join our Engineering Projects team based in Barnsley. The Planning Engineer role exists to work either alone or as part of a team to provide commercial management within the engineering and projects business of Hargreaves Industrial Services.

Duties

  • Develop, maintain and manage detailed project programmes using industry-standard planning tools (e.g. Microsoft Projects) covering all phases from engineering through to commissioning.
  • Produce integrated engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) schedules, ensuring alignment across disciplines and work packages.
  • Establish project baselines (programme, resources and progress measurement systems), ensuring robust control from project commencement.
  • Monitor and analyse project progress against the baseline programme, identifying variances, delays and potential risks to delivery.
  • Prepare and update regular progress reports, dashboards and KPI metrics for project teams and senior management.
  • Conduct critical path analysis and identify key interfaces, constraints and programme risks, recommending mitigation and recovery actions.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers and commercial team to ensure alignment between programme, cost and resource planning.
  • Support the management of change by assessing programme impacts of variations, compensation events and scope changes.
  • Develop and maintain short-term look ahead programmes (e.g. 4-week / 12-week plans) to support site execution and delivery teams.
  • Interface with subcontractors and suppliers to incorporate their schedules into the overall programme and ensure coordination across all parties.
  • Lead programme review meetings, challenging progress updates and ensuring accurate and realistic forecasting of completion dates.
  • Support claims preparation and dispute resolution by providing programme analysis, including delay analysis and entitlement assessments.
  • Undertake resource loading and productivity analysis to ensure efficient deployment of labour, plant and materials.
  • Ensure that planning processes comply with company procedures, project controls standards and client requirements.
  • Contribute to tender and pre-construction activities by developing outline and detailed programmes, phasing plans and delivery strategies.

Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Controls.
  • Typically 3+ years’ experience in a planning role within an engineering, civils, or EPC contractor environment.
  • Experience working on large-scale, multidisciplinary industrial or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of project planning principles, scheduling methodologies and project controls processes.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft projects (or equivalent planning software) for programme development and management.
  • Understanding of different project delivery models (EPC, turnkey, design & build) and their planning implications.
  • Knowledge of construction and engineering sequences across civils, mechanical, structural and electrical disciplines.
  • Familiarity with critical path methodology (CPM), earned value management (EVM) and progress measurement techniques.
  • Ability to develop detailed, logic-linked project programmes from first principles.
  • Strong analytical capability to assess progress, identify delays and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Experience in programme risk analysis, scenario planning and recovery planning.
  • Ability to carry out delay analysis (e.g. impacted as-planned, time impact analysis) to support claims and change management.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel (data analysis, reporting, dashboards) and PowerPoint for presentation of programme data.
  • Experience with project controls and reporting systems (e.g. Power BI, Asta, Microsoft Project, or similar) is advantageous.
  • Understanding of the relationship between programme, cost and commercial outcomes.
  • Awareness of contract requirements relating to programmes, particularly under NEC or similar forms.
  • Ability to assess the programme impact of compensation events, variations and changes to scope.
  • Appreciation of the role of programme in supporting claims, extensions of time and dispute resolution.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex programme information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Confidence to challenge assumptions and interrogate progress updates from project teams and subcontractors.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, commercial teams and supply chain partners.
  • Strong problem-solving capability in fast-paced project environments.
  • Resilient and adaptable, particularly in high‑pressure or changing project conditions.
