Software Engineering Manager , you\’ll lead a backend engineering team to deliver secure, scalable, and high-impact solutions. You\’ll balance technical leadership with team development, driving delivery while creating a culture of trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
As a Software Engineering Manager, your key responsibilities will include:
Technical Delivery & Strategy
Own delivery of backend services, ensuring they are reliable, scalable, and secure.
Work closely with product, architecture, and business teams to shape technical direction.
Drive effective planning, estimation, and execution of projects.
Embed continuous improvement into how the team builds, tests, deploys, and maintains software.
Champion modern engineering practices (CI/CD, TDD/BDD, clean code).
People & Team Leadership
Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing and inclusive engineering team.
Foster a psychologically safe environment where learning and innovation thrive.
Inspire and align your team around purpose, delivery goals, and engineering excellence.
Prioritise learning & development (L&D), feedback, and career progression.
Use data and engineering metrics to guide team performance and decision-making.
About You
Proven experience leading engineering teams in complex, fast-paced environments.
Strong software engineering background (Java / TypeScript / cloud-native systems).
Excellent communicator – able to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience with Agile frameworks and collaborative delivery practices.
Deep understanding of system design, architecture, and modern backend best practices.
A team-first mindset: you care deeply about people, outcomes, and culture.

3 Stage Interview
Stage 1 – Discussion with our Hiring Manager (30 mins):
A chance to talk with our Hiring Manager in more detail about the role, our vision, our tech stack and some of the problems we solve every day. Here, we\’ll dig a bit more into some of your experiences, understand the processes you\’re familiar with and the technologies you\’ve used to deliver end user value.
Stage 2 – Technical (70 mins):
For the technical part, we\’d like you to sit down with some of your potential peers to work through a system design problem. We\’ll be looking together at exploring a realistic engineering scenario – identify key issues, discuss trade-offs, and design a robust, scalable solution.
Stage 3 – Leadership & Cultural fit (70 mins):
In our Leadership & Cultural Fit section, in this live, interactive session, you\’ll step into the role of an Engineering Manager overseeing a legacy Java system. You\’ll assess the current technical and team setup, identify areas for improvement, and discuss how you\’d lead through the challenges – focusing on technical direction, team leadership, and stakeholder communication. No prep or slides needed; this is about real-time thinking and discussion.
