Excited to grow your career? Our purpose is to make it easy for people to save and invest for a better future. We are looking for great people to join us, so please come and invest in YOUR future at HL.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced financial services professional to join the Independent Governance Committee (IGC) at Hargreaves Lansdown (HL) as an IGC Member. The IGC has an important role in assessing the value for money for the 750+ workplace pension schemes HL administers for employers and their c.207,000 scheme members. The committee scrutinises service, communication, investment performance, as well as costs and charges. It will make recommendations and raise concerns through to the HL Asset Management Board and beyond to employers, scheme members and the FCA if necessary. The IGC must act solely in the interests of members of the HL Workplace pension and pathways investors and act independently of HL.

As an IGC Member, you will have significant experience in the financial services industry with in-depth knowledge of the workplace pension market and/or expert knowledge of drawdown and investment. Your specific experience and expertise will be relevant to the IGC prescribed remit and will augment and complement the skillset of the combined committee membership. The role will also require the highest standards of integrity, empathy, collaboration and professionalism.

As well as its regulatory prerequisites, the HL IGC is a valuable source of expertise which helps with shaping our future plans and development. It is therefore expected that the IGC member will take a keen interest in the business and will offer support and counsel when appropriate. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with relevant in-depth knowledge and experience to join and complement an IGC which HL is proud to maintain.

What you’ll be doing

  • Representing the interests of Workplace pension members and drawdown investment pathway investors at IGC meetings, and affirming or challenging senior management decisions which may impact the value for money they receive.
  • Attending approximately six full meetings and eight short meetings per year (based on 2025/26) and completing preparation and follow up work relating to each meeting, such as reading and report writing.
  • Assisting in writing and producing the IGC annual report, which will include the value for money assessment of the Workplace SIPP and drawdown investment pathways, and how the IGC has complied with its duty to act in members’ interests.
  • Joining IGC members in considering whether to escalate any identified concerns to the HLAM Board and, if necessary, to the FCA.
  • Upholding a high standard of professional integrity at all times.

About you

  • Expert knowledge of the workplace pensions, investment, drawdown and the pre/at retirement marketplace as a whole.
  • Expert knowledge of FCA regulations, specifically those that relate to workplace pensions, drawdown and areas relating to IGC responsibilities.
  • Experience as a member of a Board, Committee or other relevant governance role.
  • Excellent communication, listening and questioning skills.
  • Excellent data analysis skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Role model cultural awareness and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to make swift, well informed and rational decisions.
  • Confident and professional when interacting with Committee members and HL colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong understanding of the needs of Workplace pension scheme members and drawdown pathways investors.
  • Willingness to learn and develop knowledge and skills.

Interview process

The interview process will include two formal stages following initial suitability screening. Skills and experience will be considered alongside those prevalent within the existing committee membership.

This is a paid independent committee membership role. The initial term of the contract will be three years. The role will require flexibility and time capacity to adequately fulfil all professional and regulatory responsibilities as outlined.

Travel to our Bristol head office (next to Temple Meads Station) to attend IGC meetings will be required. At the discretion of the Chair, some meetings are held via Teams web conferencing.
