About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager (Environments) to lead the design, reliability, and evolution of our software-driven engineering environments within a regulated financial services organisation. This role focuses on building and operating scalable, secure, and automated environments that enable product engineering teams to deliver safely and quickly. You’ll lead teams responsible for environment management, CI/CD integration, and observability, while driving large-scale modernisation and technical debt reduction programmes across legacy and cloud-native estates.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead and develop a team of platform and environment engineers focused on software-defined infrastructure, automation, and observability.
- Own the lifecycle of engineering environments across production and non-production.
- Ensure environments are consistently release-ready, supporting modern deployment practices while meeting financial services change and governance controls.
- Drive automation and standardisation using Infrastructure as Code and configuration management, tightly integrated with CI/CD pipelines.
- Build and evolve platform capabilities that enable self‑service provisioning, consistency, and repeatability for development teams.
- Implement and maintain monitoring, alerting, and logging to support application reliability, operational resilience, and regulatory expectations.
- Lead large-scale platform improvement programmes, modernising legacy environment patterns and reducing technical debt.
- Support disaster recovery and resilience testing from a platform and application continuity perspective.
- Partner with security and risk teams to embed controls, auditability, and policy-as-code into environment platforms.
- Oversee incident management, root cause analysis, and reliability improvements using SRE‑style practices.
- Collaborate closely with Product Engineering, Architecture, Security, and Delivery teams to align environments with software design and product needs.
About you:
- Strong engineering leadership experience with a software or platform‑first mindset, ideally in regulated or complex environments.
- Proven experience leading Platform Engineering, DevOps, or SRE teams.
- Hands‑on familiarity with on premise private cloud and public cloud platforms, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code and tools such as Terraform and Puppet.
- Experience delivering platform modernisation and technical debt reduction programmes at scale.
- Strong understanding of software delivery lifecycles, release management, and deployment strategies in regulated environments.
- Ability to engage deeply with engineers on system design, reliability, and architectural trade‑offs.
- Experience embedding security, compliance, and operational controls into software platforms.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for risk, compliance, and senior leadership audiences.
