Interaction Designer

Full-Time On-site
Hard Problems

Active Travel England (ATE) is an executive agency of the Department for Transport. It leads on walking, wheeling and cycling across England, helping people and communities be more active by making streets safer and more accessible. It does this by building skills, providing expert design and planning advice, and strengthening the case for investment in active travel infrastructure.

The role

ATE is hiring two Interaction Designers to support a growing digital portfolio, including a strategic transformation programme. The roles sit within a multidisciplinary team and are offered on a fixed-term appointment of up to two years. For permanent Civil Servants, the role is available on loan only, subject to home department approval. The designated workplace is York, with hybrid working in place.

What you would do

  • Work with business analysts, delivery managers, engineers and stakeholders to understand problems and user needs.
  • Turn research findings, service requirements and evidence into user journeys, interaction flows, wireframes and prototypes.
  • Create and test designs at the right level of fidelity, from early concepts through to detailed prototypes.
  • Iterate designs in response to usability testing, data, accessibility findings and delivery constraints.
  • Design inclusive and accessible experiences that meet government standards and accessibility requirements.
  • Use and contribute to established design patterns and components, identifying where new approaches are needed.
  • Clearly communicate and document design decisions, assumptions, risks and unresolved issues.
  • Plan and facilitate collaborative design sessions with users, stakeholders and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Help teams embed user-centred design and agile ways of working, sharing good practice and constructively challenging assumptions.

What they are looking for

  • Experience designing user experiences for digital services using user-centred and iterative design methods.
  • Ability to create user journeys, interaction flows, wireframes or prototypes and adapt fidelity to the stage of delivery.
  • Ability to use qualitative and quantitative evidence to develop, test and improve design ideas.
  • Experience designing accessible and inclusive services, applying relevant standards, patterns and guidance.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and involving users and stakeholders throughout the design process.
  • Ability to explain complex design problems and decisions clearly to non-design colleagues, building consensus and constructively challenging assumptions.
  • Ability to manage design work across competing priorities while maintaining quality and focus.

Working arrangements

The role is based in York. Hybrid working is available on a non-contractual basis, with a minimum of 60% of working time each month spent at the designated workplace or another required location. Full-time hours are 37 hours per week; part-time applications are welcome provided the candidate can work at least 35 hours per week. Flexible working, job share and part-time patterns are all considered. Occasional travel to other offices, which may involve overnight stays, is required. The role cannot be sponsored under a UK Skilled Worker visa; candidates must have the right to work in the UK.

Pay and benefits

The salary is Β£45,900 per year. The Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme includes an employer contribution of 28.97% (equivalent to Β£13,297 per year at this salary). Additional benefits include 25 days annual leave rising by one day per year of service to a maximum of 30 days, eight bank holidays, a privilege day for the King's birthday, access to a staff discount portal, career development opportunities including funded professional qualifications, a 24-hour Employee Assistance Programme, and flexible working options.
