Harburn Golf Club was founded in 1933 and is a highly rated golf course in Central Scotland located on the outskirts of West Calder in West Lothian. We are currently looking for an Apprentice Greenkeeper to join our successful team. This is a new position created this year as a result of our course receiving fantastic reviews around the condition and playability, which has contributed to our nomination as a Finalist in the Scottish “Golf Club of the Year 2026” Awards.
The successful applicant would report directly to the Head Greenkeeper, should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work both as part of a team or alone, contributing a strong work ethic. The post requires someone who is highly motivated with good communication skills. This is a varied and rewarding opportunity and each day will entail a variety of outdoor tasks in a range of weather conditions requiring a good level of fitness. There is also a requirement to follow and carry out oral and written instructions and be available for early morning start each day.
Requirements
- Interest in landscaping techniques and practices, although training will be provided.
- Interest in working with hand tools, golf course machinery and power tools used in groundskeeping work.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Good communication skills to collaborate with team members effectively.
The Club is seeking someone to learn and train in best greenkeeping practices and will support the successful candidate with college fees as well as study leave requirements. The Club will provide all staff PPE, uniform and equipment requirements and training support to build knowledge and skill sets.
Responsibilities
- Perform general groundskeeping duties to maintain the appearance and functionality of the golf course and peripheral green spaces.
- Support the team to build and maintain landscape features such as paths, fences, and walls.
- Irrigate greens, maintain fairways and treework management.
- Conduct regular landscape maintenance tasks including mowing, bunker work, trimming and pruning.
- Utilise hand tools and power tools to complete various tasks as designated.
- Apply fertilisers, treatments and dressings as well as aeration work on greens.
- Prepare ground for planting and transplanting trees.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of drainage systems.
- Operate and maintain mechanical equipment used in groundskeeping activities.
