Purpose of Role

The Cloud and Platform Engineer is responsible for the leadership, management, and delivery of platform services to consistently meet current and future requirements of the business. Supports the business objectives by providing safe, secure, and reliable IS platform infrastructure and infrastructure services to ensure sustainability and efficiency of IS services while adhering to cyber security requirements and principles. The role works with appropriate teams and third‑party vendors. Shaping our cloud strategy by providing key tactical input to the cloud architect, driving FinOps/SRE practices governing the operations of managed service providers. Defining resilience and disaster recovery strategies. Improve ways of working, demonstrated by results such as the level of reliability of infrastructure services.

Critical Responsibilities (MAE/MATTE/HSES)

  • Ensuring that all activities are carried out in a safe manner complying with all regulatory requirements, legislation and Harbour Energy HSES Procedures.

Ethics and Compliance Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all activities and behaviours are carried out in accordance with Harbour Energy’s Ethics and Compliance Policies and Procedures, and to complete any compulsory compliance training as required.

Areas of Accountability, Responsibility and Competence

  • Supports the execution of the IS strategy and roadmap, including developing relevant functional objectives for the area.
  • Cloud Leadership: Act as the hands‑on technical lead for cloud infrastructure in public cloud.
  • Modernisation & IaC: Drive the adoption of modern practices, including GitOps, infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, Bicep, or ARM), and CI/CD development (transitioning from Azure DevOps to GitHub Enterprise).
  • Automation: Lead automation efforts utilising broad scripting capabilities to drive operational efficiency across our platforms.
  • Observability: Implement and manage robust cloud observability metrics, monitor frameworks, and automated runbooks using tools like Azure Monitor, ServiceNow, Prometheus, and Grafana to benefit internal teams and end‑users.
  • Lead FinOps initiatives, analyse spending, identify waste, implement right‑sizing, and model unit economics to optimise cloud costs.
  • Governance & Compliance: Define and enforce general cloud governance, security controls, access management, and compliance baselines.
  • OS Agility: Support and operate across both standard Windows and Linux environments, demonstrating versatility.
  • Vendor Management: Provide day‑to‑day guidance and oversight to the managed service provider, ensuring adherence to established standards and best practices.
  • Container Infrastructure: Manage and oversee container infrastructure and tooling (such as Kubernetes, AKS, or EKS). Partner with product managers to deploy and operate containerised applications, overseeing the health and scalability of the underlying platform.
  • Handle relevant incident management and root cause analysis and participate in an on‑call rotation.
  • Mentorship: Provide expert technical mentorship to other engineers across the organisation.

Critical Skills, Qualifications, Experience, etc.

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 years of dedicated hands‑on cloud engineering experience, demonstrating progressive responsibility.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Azure is required; experience with AWS is a significant plus.
  • Proven experience with FinOps, IaC, configuration management, and modern CI/CD platforms.
  • Strong proficiency with CI/CD workflows.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • A proactive drive to set and uphold technical standards and mentor others.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical work experience.
  • Self‑motivated and pro‑active with a willingness to go the extra mile to achieve important goals.
  • Proven experience as a subject‑matter expert in operational infrastructure support and maintenance (including own and cloud data centres) in the oil and gas sector or equivalent, covering systems such as server, storage, back‑up & recovery, SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and security services.
  • Commitment to staying up to date with emerging technologies and industry best practices.

Preferred

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification is preferred.
  • Comparable AWS certifications are also valued.
