Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center offers hope and healing for youth ages 7 to 17 at the time of admission with several psychiatric diagnoses and/or developmental disabilities. Located in Portsmouth, VA, Harbor Point provides intensive, residential treatment in a comfortable setting designed for healing. Our facility specializes in treating children and adolescents with depression, bipolar disorders, ADHD, and other mental health issues. We also offer specific treatment programs for those with intellectual disabilities or self‑injurious behavior. Harbor Point and its programs are fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities. We are licensed by The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Virginia Department of Education. We are a TRICARE®-approved and certified facility.
Responsibilities
- The overall responsibility of the Residential Counselor is to develop therapeutic relationships with and provide appropriate guidance and supervision to children and teenagers receiving treatment.
Shift Schedule
- 1st Shift: 6:45 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
- 2nd Shift: 2:45 p.m. – 11:15 p.m.
- 3rd Shift: 10:45 p.m. – 7:15 a.m.
Job Duties
- Contribute to the effective implementation of individual treatment plans through line‑of‑sight supervision, positive interaction, role modeling, and appropriate behavior scoring.
- Maintain the safety and security of the facility through close observation, monitoring of residents, optimal physical proximity, alertness, and proactive intervention.
- Promote development of residents’ daily living skills through task assignment, instruction, and supervision.
- Stimulate residents’ interest and cooperation in individual and group activities via positive interaction, instruction, supervision, feedback, and encouragement.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation on resident behavior per policy, report observations to relevant staff, and make recommendations based on observations.
- Assist in preparation of other behavioral reports and daily activity logs as required.
- Provide crisis intervention as necessary, anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors using de‑escalation techniques, prioritizing safety, and following restraint guidelines and neutral emotion display.
- Use counseling skills to de‑escalate aggression, actively listen, maintain appropriate tone and volume, deliver frequent positive reinforcements, maintain boundaries, and promote a positive peer culture.
- During school hours, act as the paraprofessional managing behaviors and assisting the teacher in the classroom.

Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field with coursework in psychology and child and adolescent development preferred.
- Experience working with children and adolescents preferred.
- Previous experience in a residential or psychiatric setting with children and adolescents preferred.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
