Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Rotherham working within a children’s residential setting as a Mentor. The role involves providing day-to-day care, guidance, and emotional support to children and young people, helping them feel safe, respected, and listened to. You will support routines such as mealtimes, school attendance, activities, and settling time, ensuring that each child’s care plan and individual needs are followed. Daily tasks include key-working sessions, record-keeping, attending meetings, and liaising with schools, social workers, and other professionals. You will help manage behaviour in a positive, trauma-informed way, encourage participation in education and recreational activities, and support young people in developing independence skills. The role also includes contributing to household tasks, maintaining a clean and homely environment, and adhering to all safeguarding and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children or young people in residential care, education, youth work, or similar settings.
- Strong communication, active listening, and de-escalation skills, with the ability to build trusting, professional relationships.
- Understanding of safeguarding, professional boundaries, trauma-informed practice, and child development.
- Ability to keep accurate written records, follow care plans, and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Resilience, emotional stability, and the capacity to remain calm and solution-focused in challenging situations.
- Willingness to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and sleep-ins where required.
- Relevant care qualification (e.g., Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or willingness to work towards it within set timeframes).
- Basic IT skills for completing electronic records and reports.
- Right to work in the UK; satisfactory enhanced DBS check and suitable references.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are desirable but not essential.
