My client seeks a new External Communications Manager to develop effective communications across a range of different organisations including economic consultancies, political think tanks and charity partners. The successful candidate will be responsible for day-to-day proactive and reactive media activity, whilst nurturing contacts among key external audiences. They will work with the wider team and external providers to raise both the organisation’s and the industry’s profile, gaining impactful coverage for key issues and campaigns.
Being responsible for a range of high-quality leadership communications, the Communications Manager role will include speech writing, op-eds, comments, briefings and managing the press office inbox, whilst being the main point of contact for all media enquiries.
The successful candidate will have excellent writing skills and experience working in a busy press office or news environment as a press/media officer, account manager or journalist.
Key Responsibilities:
- Handling the organisation’s day-to-day media activity, including managing the planning calendar
- Preparing statements, articles, media briefs, comments, speeches and press releases, both in support of direct organisational activity and across issues of interest
- Engaging and building relations with all parts of the media, from specialist publications, through to national print, online and broadcast media as well as managing the press office inbox
- Managing the media database and all contact lists
- Undertaking regular media monitoring and evaluation
- Working with external providers on campaigns and stories
Key Requirements:
- Excellent writing and editing skills, coupled with a keen news sense and highly proactive approach
- Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and distil into clear communications outputs
- Proven track record in media relations, including story handling and the planning and execution of successful campaigns
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact successfully with journalists, key external stakeholders and providers
- Excellent planning and organisational skills – with ability to remain calm under pressure, working to tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
