This is an exciting opportunity for a Science Technician to join Hampton’s vibrant and popular Chemistry department. Hampton is one of the country’s foremost academically selective independent schools and this is an excellent opportunity to join a vibrant and successful department in a happy, high-achieving setting.
Chemistry is a hugely popular subject at Hampton. Pupils study Chemistry as a separate science from the start of the First Year, with all boys taking GCSE Chemistry in Fifth Year and a significant proportion of boys electing to continue with Chemistry into the Sixth Form. Outside the classroom, there is a range of Chemistry-related co-curricular activities which allow pupils to take their interests further and in their own time. The boys regularly receive Gold and Silver certificates in national competitions such as the Chemistry Olympiad and the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.
All Teachers convey their passion for their subjects through intellectually stimulating and engaging courses, and Technicians play an important and integral role in supporting this. Working as part of a team, the role is responsible for providing support across ten Chemistry laboratories, assisting in the preparation of class practicals, setting up and clearing away all the apparatus, ensuring laboratories are clean and tidy, washing up within the department (glassware, etc.) and assisting with the general security of and safety within the department.
Each of the three science disciplines, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, runs independently of each other with their own laboratories and technical staff. Chemistry consists of two Technicians plus two part-time Assistants across ten laboratories, and Biology and Physics each have two Technicians and seven and eight laboratories, respectively.
The role is full-time, term time and the hours are 8.30am – 4.30pm during Hampton School term time, plus one week during the School holidays. The role is suitable for an experienced Technician and qualified graduates with previous experience of working in a laboratory are also welcome to apply. A Chemistry, Biology, Physics or related qualification would be an advantage.
The School offers competitive salaries and an attractive benefits package including generous pension contribution and holiday allowance, free three-course lunch, cycle-to-work scheme, fitness facilities, and private medical, subject to eligibility. The salary will be £30,000 - £34,000 (full-time equivalent) commensurate with years’ experience and qualifications and will be pro-rata.
We encourage applications as soon as possible and the School reserves the right to commence or complete the interview process at any time prior to the closing date.
