As a Bilingual Assistant, you will help children and young people who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) to improve their educational outcomes and well-being. This may include working with children and young people who are refugees or Separated Minors (UASC). This position requires the successful candidate to be fully proficient in Pashto with proficiency in Dari and/or Farsi desirable. The role is home based with some work carried out in schools and at office locations in Basingstoke and Winchester. This is a Term-Time only role working 39 weeks. Anticipated start date 1 September 2026.

This role includes working with mothers and/or girls, supporting with sex education, changes to body, and other sensitive areas and questions. You should therefore be able to demonstrate a high level of empathy, professionalism and confidence when working in these areas.

What you’ll do:

  • You will use your bilingual skills to support pupils in all school phases from Reception to Year 11.
  • In groups and on a one-to-one basis, you will support them to access the mainstream curriculum and to realise their aspirations for their futures.
  • Your support will help them engage in their education, raise their attainment and ensure that the children’s cultures and languages are valued in school.
  • Acting as an interpreter for parental discussions, you will also gather background information about individual children, informally assess their skills in Pashto/Dari/Farsi and English and support effective home-school communication.
  • You will advise teachers of pupils’ first language development and underlying cognitive ability.
  • This will include informing teachers of areas where the children may require additional support, for example if they are experiencing the impacts of trauma, racist abuse or bullying.

Travel Requirements: You will be required to travel to various locations within Hampshire, and it is essential that you have a current drivers’ licence and access to a reliable vehicle on a regular basis.
