The Role
We are seeking a qualified and forward-thinking Finance Systems Accountant to join our Finance team in Birmingham. This is a strategic role at the centre of our finance transformation agenda. The successful candidate will lead digital innovation across finance, with a strong focus on automation, systems optimisation and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). You will oversee the design, implementation and enhancement of finance systems, manage monthly management accounts, lead a small team, and strengthen financial controls, data integrity and reporting insight across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operation of all finance systems, ensuring reliability, performance and data accuracy.
- Act as the primary liaison with external technology partners.
- Lead system upgrades, updates and enhancements, including planning, testing and communication.
- Identify and mitigate system risks, driving continuous improvement.
- Lead implementation of new finance systems and enhancements to existing platforms.
- Identify and implement automation and AI-enabled tools.
- Review end-to-end finance processes to identify opportunities for automation and standardisation.
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency and integrity across finance systems.
- Enhance reporting capability, dashboards and forecasting tools.
- Lead and develop the Management Accounts team (2 direct reports).
- Maintain robust system-based financial controls and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Support internal and external audit processes.
Person Specification
Essential
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) or equivalent experience.
- Strong understanding of core finance processes and finance systems architecture.
- Experience implementing, upgrading or supporting ERP systems, purchase order systems or budgeting tools.
- Demonstrable track record of delivering automation or system-enabled efficiencies.
- Strong analytical capability with the ability to translate complex data into meaningful insight.
- Project management and change delivery experience.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proven people management experience.
- Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable
- Experience of Sun Accounting System.
- Experience with Jedox or similar budgeting/forecasting tools.
- Experience with Power BI or similar data visualisation tools.
- Exposure to AI-enabled finance technologies.
- Understanding of data governance and ethical AI use within a regulated environment.
