A 6-month office-based contract role in Wokingham (5 days on-site), for an experienced Power System Network Model Engineer. The role is responsible for enhancing, maintaining, and validating the Energy Management System (EMS) Network Model across the transmission network, ensuring accurate representation of substations, assets, topology, telemetry, and operational equipment. The position directly supports critical EMS functions including State Estimation, Contingency Analysis, Load Flow Analysis, and Real Time Operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance Transmission EMS Network Models, creating and managing device relationships across all key network assets including substations, transformers, circuit breakers, HVDC assets, and SCADA telemetry points.
  • Build and maintain accurate connectivity and topology models within the EMS platform, performing validation, quality assurance, and data integrity checks.
  • Support modelling activities for new commissioning, network changes, and asset updates, ensuring consistency between EMS, SCADA, GIS, Asset Management, and Planning systems.
  • Analyse and resolve model discrepancies impacting EMS applications, supporting State Estimator, Network Topology Processor, Power Flow, and Contingency Analysis functions.
  • Participate in network model migrations, system upgrades, and integration activities, while maintaining technical documentation, modelling standards, and governance procedures.

Top 5 Skills

  • EMS network modelling expertise - 8+ years of hands-on experience in Transmission EMS Network Modelling and Power System Applications, ideally with GE PowerOn or GE XA/21 platforms.
  • Device relationship & connectivity modelling - Deep expertise in creating and maintaining device relationships, substation configurations, network topology, and connectivity models within operational EMS environments.
  • Power systems knowledge - Solid understanding of transmission network topology, State Estimation, Load Flow, Contingency Analysis, and operational power system principles within TSO, ISO, or utility environments.
  • IEC CIM standards & SCADA - Knowledge of IEC CIM standards (IEC 61970/61968), model exchange processes, and SCADA point-to-device mapping and telemetry modelling.
  • Data & automation skills - Understanding of database technologies, SQL, XML, and automation scripting, with Python being the preferred language; degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering is required.
