This is a rare opportunity to join a public-sector organisation with genuine technical depth, running and evolving its own data centre and enterprise network estate. Rather than being siloed or boxed into BAU, you will work across network design, deployment, support, and continuous improvement, with real influence over direction and standards. The environment is complex, security-focused, and evolving — ideal for engineers who enjoy ownership, responsibility, and seeing the direct impact of their work. There are multiple hires at different levels, including senior roles with technical leadership and light people management, making this suitable for engineers looking to step up without becoming detached from the tech. Hybrid working is supported, clearance is fully funded, and the team is growing — not shrinking.
Responsibilities:
- Design, deploy, and support enterprise network infrastructure across LAN, WAN, wireless, and security domains.
- Maintain and enhance an on-premise data centre environment.
- Act as a technical escalation point for complex network issues.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior network engineers.
- Support and evolve Cisco-based firewall, switching, and wireless estates.
- Contribute to architectural decisions, including the transition away from legacy platforms.
- Work closely with stakeholders to ensure network availability, performance, and security.
- Participate in an on-call rota (with improving frequency as the team grows).
Skills / Must Have:
- Strong enterprise networking experience (routing, switching, firewalls).
- Hands-on experience with some of the following:
- Cisco Firepower & Cisco ASA
- Cisco Wireless & Cisco ISE
- Cisco ACI (or migration away from ACI to modern platforms)
- Palo Alto Firewalls
- F5 Load Balancers
- Meraki SD-WAN
Nice to Have:
- Experience acting as a Network Technical Lead.
- Exposure to Nexus Dashboard Manager or modern DC management platforms.
- Background in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
Benefits:
- Hybrid working – typically 2 days per week in the office, flexibility supported.
- Office locations in Hull or Sheffield.
- On-call allowance of £4,000 per annum.
- Fully funded NPPV3, with progression to SC Clearance.
- Clear growth path as the team expands from 6 to 10 network engineers.
- Stable public-sector environment with long-term investment in technology.
Salary:
- Senior Network Engineer (Band F): £45,000 – £49,800 + £4,000 on-call
- Network Engineer (Band D): £32,000 – £37,000 + £4,000 on-call
On-Call:
- Currently 1 week in 4, moving to 1 week in 6 as hiring completes.
