Overview

This is a long-term, high-impact network engineering role supporting a major rail and transport infrastructure programme based in Woolwich. The project is part of a multi-year modernisation initiative, migrating legacy transmission technology into a modern, resilient IP/MPLS core network. You’ll be working on a 3-year transformation programme, consolidating multiple networks into a single secure, highly available architecture supporting live operational rail environments. This is not BAU support. It’s proper engineering work involving design, migration planning, and delivery at national scale. If you enjoy working on mission-critical networks, long-term projects, and environments where downtime is not an option, this role will keep you challenged and relevant.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver IP data network solutions supporting rail and transport operations.
  • Produce High Level Designs and Low Level Designs for complex network migrations.
  • Lead and support the migration from legacy SDH infrastructure into a modern MPLS core.
  • Support the deployment of a dual-core architecture with full failover capability.
  • Contribute to the integration of OTN and IP/MPLS technologies.
  • Develop and execute detailed migration plans across approximately 50 operational sites.
  • Secure the network in line with critical infrastructure and operational technology requirements.
  • Work closely with stakeholders across engineering, operations, and delivery teams.
  • Provide hands-on technical input during implementation and cutover phases.

Skills / Must have

  • Strong IP networking background with experience in large-scale data networks.
  • Proven experience producing HLD and LLD documentation.
  • Experience with MPLS core networks (Nokia experience highly desirable).
  • Understanding of OTN and carrier-grade transport environments.
  • Experience working in rail, transport, utilities, or other operational technology environments.
  • Ability to work onsite full time in Woolwich.
  • Strong troubleshooting, planning, and documentation skills.
  • Long-term, stable programme work on critical national infrastructure.
  • Exposure to modern MPLS core technologies replacing legacy SDH systems.
  • Opportunity to work on a multi-year transformation programme rather than short-term BAU.
  • Clear ownership and influence over network design and migration strategy.

Salary: £55,000–£70,000 per annum (flexible within range depending on experience).
