We are currently seeking an experienced Firmware Tester to join a leading UK utilities provider on a 6-month rolling contract. This is an exciting opportunity to work on critical smart metering firmware within a high-performing engineering team, contributing to the ongoing development, validation, and compliance of SMETS2 smart meter firmware.

The role is Manchester-based, 5 days per week onsite, and the remainder remote. You'll be joining a dynamic and collaborative environment, focused on delivering high-quality firmware solutions to support the UK's smart energy infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct meticulous testing of smart meter firmware, focusing on end-to-end business processes to validate functionality and performance.
  • Execute predefined test plans, systematically identify and log defects, and ensure all outputs are accurately recorded.
  • Produce clear and comprehensive test exit reports in the required format, including detailed defect documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts and stakeholders to replicate issues and assist in root cause analysis.
  • Proactively communicate test progress, risks, and blockers to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Carry out set-up and tear-down processes on existing test accounts to ensure clean test environments.
  • Provide hands-on support in the onsite lab for remote testers, including the physical installation of test equipment, manual meter configuration, reading outputs, and relaying results.
  • Maintain all testing equipment and environments to a high standard, ensuring consistency, cleanliness, and organisation within the test lab.

What you will Ideally Bring:

  • Previous experience in firmware or product testing is desirable, though a solid understanding of energy sector offerings and consumer electronic products is equally valuable.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to present and liaise effectively across all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly self-motivated and capable of working independently, managing personal workload and priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Tenacious, resilient, and resourceful in identifying and resolving issues; able to manage risks and develop contingency plans proactively.

Desirable knowledge and/or experience in:

  • The UK energy and smart metering industry, including familiarity with SMETS2 standards and DCC Service Requests.
  • Using platforms such as Salesforce, the DCC Self-Service Interface, and Waypoint to support testing and analysis activities.
