The Opportunity
We are currently recruiting for a Senior Gardener based in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire. This is a full time permanent position, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 4.30pm, with a salary of £33,000 per year. The start date is ASAP. Due to the location, you must be a car driver.
This is a senior hands-on role within a highly regarded gardens team working across an exceptional landscaped setting extending over 300 acres, designed in the style of a classic estate landscape. The gardens have recently undergone extensive investment and include large mixed borders with cottage garden style planting, Rhododendron walks, a Japanese koi pond, an orangery, and a large kitchen garden. Some areas remain under development, offering the opportunity to be involved in shaping the gardens as they continue to evolve.
This role suits an experienced gardener with strong horticultural knowledge who can work proactively, maintain high standards, and support the wider gardening team through example and guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out all aspects of garden maintenance to a consistently high horticultural standard
- Take responsibility for the care and presentation of allocated garden areas, ensuring excellent detail and finish
- Maintain large mixed borders, shrub planting, and seasonal displays with strong plant knowledge
- Support the care and development of specialist garden areas, including Rhododendron walks, the Japanese koi pond, the orangery setting, and the kitchen garden
- Assist with planning and delivering seasonal work programmes and planting schedules
- Monitor plant health, identify pests and diseases, and apply appropriate treatments where required
- Support garden development and improvement projects as new areas are completed
- Operate horticultural tools and machinery safely, completing routine checks and basic maintenance
- Maintain high presentation standards across all garden areas
- Follow Health and Safety procedures and safe working practices at all times
- Provide guidance and on-site support to less experienced team members
- Work independently when required and contribute positively to the wider team
Requirements
- Proven experience working as a Gardener or Senior Gardener in high standard gardens or estates
- Strong horticultural knowledge, including plant identification, pruning techniques, and seasonal care
- Full UK driving licence and access to a car essential due to location
- Confident use of horticultural tools and garden machinery
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong attention to detail and pride in presentation
- Horticultural qualifications desirable, but strong practical experience is equally valued
- Industry certificates advantageous, including PA1 and PA6, chainsaw, and pruning
