The Role: Electronics Engineer

Crowcon Detection Instruments Ltd. is looking to recruit an Electronics Engineer within the Technical Department to help shape the next generation of Crowcon products. The role will report to the Head of Hardware Design.

Crowcon is on an exciting growth journey looking to provide innovative solutions within the realm of gas detection. The R&D team plays an integral part in delivering the overall strategy aimed at driving sustainable growth through the development of leading products and the delivery of an ambitious roadmap. The team is pushing innovation across multiple fields including the use of Machine Learning for state-of-the-art sensors, IoT communications, integrated manufacturing, and deployment of full-stack software solutions.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Design Architecture & Development
    • Shape next-generation products by designing analogue and digital circuitry, creating PCB layouts and footprints, and producing high-quality manufacturing documentation that meets (and exceeds) Crowcon’s specifications.
    • Own the details with meticulous checking of BOMs and project documentation to ensure flawless execution.
    • Put innovation to the test through rigorous validation of electronic systems and components, ensuring exceptional performance, reliability, and industry compliance.
    • Solve real-world engineering puzzles by troubleshooting and debugging complex electronic systems with speed and accuracy.
    • Support and enhance existing product lines, contributing to sustaining engineering and leading system-level fault-finding and problem-solving when required.
    • Stay ahead of the curve by keeping up with new technologies, industry trends, and evolving regulations—and using this insight to elevate product design and engineering practices.
    • Champion continuous improvement, refining tools, processes, and documentation to raise engineering standards across the board.
    • Collaborate with external regulatory bodies to help secure certifications such as ATEX, EMC, and UKCA, which may include occasional travel to partner facilities.

    • Explore emerging technologies, tools, and design approaches to push system boundaries and elevate product performance.
    • Drive continuous refinement of development workflows, validation methods, and automation systems.
    • Promote quality-first engineering practices.
    • Demonstrate ownership and proactive problem-solving, setting a high technical bar for the team.
    • Work closely with hardware, software, and sensor teams to deliver tightly integrated system solutions.
    • Facilitate technical discussions that align architecture, design choices, and implementation details across domains.
    • Communicate clearly with cross-functional stakeholders, translating complex technical considerations into actionable direction.
    • Share expertise openly, mentoring team members and helping grow engineering capability across the organisation.

What You’ll Bring

  • Essential
    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
    • Hands-on experience developing hardware prototypes within a dynamic R&D environment.
    • Strong understanding of hardware–software co-design, PCB-level debugging, and sensor integration.
    • Familiarity with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, and Modbus.
    • Knowledge of regulatory compliance for electronic products (e.g., EMC, safety).
  • Desirable
    • Experience designing for low-power embedded systems and advanced sensor architectures.
    • Comfort with automation, validation tools, and continuous testing workflows.
    • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to diagnose complex system-level issues.
    • Knowledge of ATEX certification, including 60079-11, intrinsic safety.
