The Opportunity
HallMark Veterinary and Compliance Services is recruiting a Meat Hygiene Inspector to join a busy and well‑established meat processing facility at Pilgrims, Spalding. This is a permanent, site‑based role offering long‑term stability, a full‑time contract, and the opportunity to contribute to essential food safety, hygiene, and animal welfare standards within the UK meat industry.
About the Role
As a Meat Hygiene Inspector, you will support the Official Veterinarian in delivering official controls in line with Food Standards Agency requirements and the Manual of Official Controls. You will play a key role in ensuring that meat produced on site meets regulatory, food safety, and animal welfare standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out post‑mortem inspections on red meat species (carcasses, heads, and offal).
- Identify contamination, abnormalities, or non‑compliances and refer findings to the OV.
- Verify animal identification, welfare standards, and hygiene compliance.
- Apply health marks and ensure correct carcass identification in line with legislation.
- Collect and accurately record residue, Trichinella, and TSE samples.
- Support the OV with official controls and escalation of non‑compliance where required.
- Maintain accurate records using relevant IT systems and uphold site biosecurity standards.
- Work collaboratively within the HallMark Official Controls team, promoting professionalism and best practice.
Qualifications & Skills
- FSA-authorised Meat Hygiene Inspector (or qualified via an approved route).
- Proven experience in red meat post‑mortem inspection.
- Strong understanding of FSA legislation and the Manual of Official Controls.
- Competent in sampling procedures and accurate record keeping.
- Comfortable working rota‑based shifts across a Monday–Sunday operation.
- Good communication, teamwork, and time‑management skills.
- Awareness of health & safety and animal welfare requirements.
- Experience working across multiple species.
- Level 4 Diploma for Proficiency in Meat Inspection
- Level 2 Certificate for Poultry Meat Inspection
- Level 2 Award in Principles of the Safe Use of Knives in Meat Inspection
