At Halliford School, Geography is a thriving and popular subject, valued for its unique position at the intersection of the Arts and the Sciences. The Geography Department is committed to developing students’ core geographical skills, including observation, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and evaluative judgement. Alongside these skills, pupils are encouraged to think critically about people, places, and environments, enabling them to construct informed social, moral, and political viewpoints and to understand how human and physical processes interact to shape the world.
The successful candidate will teach Geography across year groups, with students taught in mixed-ability classes through an engaging and carefully sequenced curriculum that builds strong foundations in geographical knowledge, enquiry, and skills. Topics include Our Amazing World, Geography of Crime, Geography of Sport, Global Hazards and Ecosystems, among others. Lessons promote curiosity, independent thinking, and the application of geographical understanding to real world contexts, ensuring a smooth progression to GCSE and beyond.
As a forward‑thinking department, we make extensive use of technology, with all students equipped with their own touch‑screen device to support learning. Microsoft Teams and OneNote are used to plan and deliver lessons, with students’ progress and targets recorded in their assessment books.
At GCSE, Geography is a highly successful option, with a strong uptake and excellent outcomes. Students follow the OCR B: Geography for Enquiring Minds specification, developing their understanding of global challenges while refining examination technique and fieldwork skills. At A Level, students follow the OCR Geography course and engage with complex geographical issues through independent research, synoptic thinking, and extensive fieldwork, including the completion of the Non‑Examined Assessment (NEA).
The Geography Department consists of three full‑time members of staff who work collaboratively in a supportive and collegiate environment. The department is based in a suite of two air‑conditioned classrooms with an adjacent departmental office. Examination results are very strong, and the department prides itself on fostering high academic standards while maintaining students’ enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject.
Fieldwork is regarded as an integral part of geographical education at Halliford. Classroom learning is complemented by a wide range of fieldwork opportunities across all year groups, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real‑world settings. At A Level, fieldwork develops a high degree of independence, responsibility, and academic rigour, particularly through extended research and report writing. The department also organises enrichment opportunities, including a biennial Geography trip to Iceland.
