Freelance Network | Mid-Senior Web Developer

Freelance Home office (partial)
Hallam

We are looking for an experienced Freelance Mid-Senior Web Developer to join our freelance roster, supporting our current developers in our Experience Department on ambitious B2B website & product projects.

About the Role

This role is about building clear, performant, well-crafted web experiences from the ground up. You’ll be working across a varied mix of B2B projects, collaborating closely with UX, UI and project management to turn polished Figma designs into fast, accessible, best-in-class websites.

We are looking for people who care about their craft. You should have an eye for design detail, a grounding in best practices, and the experience to deliver well under fast-paced agency conditions.

The work

Work will be varied and you will support web development (primarily WordPress web development) across a mix of ambitious B2B projects, including:

  • Full website builds and rebuilds across a wide range of sectors
  • Work can range from landing pages, to lead-gen sites and through to full ecommerce and complex multilingual builds
  • Projects involving older or established codebases requiring a careful hand
  • Close collaboration with UX, UI designers, and project managers to turn supplied designs into performant, engaging websites

What you’ll bring to the role

You’re an experienced web developer (front end and back end) with a strong WordPress background and a solid grasp of modern development practices. You’re comfortable working across the full range of what WordPress can be, from traditional templated builds to more modern Gutenberg / ACF Blocks based approaches, and you know your way around the wider ecosystem.

On the technical side, you’ll bring:

  • Strong WordPress development experience, including familiarity with a wide range of implementations
  • Solid hands-on experience with ACF and ACF blocks, as well as traditional WordPress templating approaches
  • Fluency in SASS, JavaScript, PHP and HTML is a given and React and TypeScript experience is advantageous
  • A thorough understanding of Version Control (BitBucket) including Git flow models
  • Experience with WPEngine hosting environments and management would be beneficial and familiarity with Vercel is a bonus
  • Solid grounding in web performance and accessibility best practices, (and a genuine desire to deliver them)
  • SEO should be well understood along with delivering on-site technical SEO factors
  • Experience with building custom WooCommerce sites and working with multilingual tools like Polylang would be beneficial.
  • The ability to utilise AI tools to support and accelerate development, with the discipline to properly QA any AI-assisted output

Beyond the core stack, you’ll also bring:

  • A keen eye for design and the confidence to not only follow Figma designs precisely, but to flag potential issues and spot opportunities to add engagement, animation, and polish
  • Experience designing or building on CMS platforms beyond WordPress, such as Payload, Webflow, Shopify, or modern headless setups
  • Comfort working in an agency environment, with an understanding of time allocation, budgets, and delivery realities

Experience we’re excited about

  • A strong portfolio of website builds and digital work across a variety of sectors
  • Demonstrated experience with ACF Blocks and modern WordPress development patterns
  • A history of working closely with design teams and translating Figma into high quality, performant builds

Who you’ll work with

You’ll work with Hallam’s Experience team, a tight-knit group across UX, UI, and development with big ambitions and high standards. We’re always innovating, pushing boundaries, and working closely together to make work that’s thoughtful, scalable, and well-crafted. We take the work seriously, not ourselves, and we care deeply about strong design systems, smooth delivery, and doing great work for our clients.

About Hallam

We’re not just some self-obsessed agency promising table tennis and unlimited snacks in exchange for your soul. And that’s why we’ll always show up with something to say, not just something to sell.

We share a mission to deliver outstanding work with purpose. We’re here to do business in a better way: to work hard to do the right things, not only for our clients but our people and the world around us.

Work should exist to make life better and we are a great place to work. Hallam has been chosen by its employees as one of the best places to work, and in the top 40 marketing employers in the UK.

You’ll join a team of more than 60 talented digital geeks who love everything from board game nights to agency trips out to a post-work tipple(s).

What’s it like working with Hallam?

You’ll get to work for a progressive agency that is driven by its people and values, not just profit. We’ll set you off on your personalised freelance onboarding program where you’ll get to know us; your point of contact and the experience team as well as how we do things around here through our proven design operations and processes.

We highly encourage applicants from under-represented ethnic groups and LGBTQ+ communities. Throughout the recruitment process, we will strive to make interviews as diverse and gender-balanced as possible for impartiality. As long as you’re qualified, you’ll receive equal consideration for employment regardless of race, religion, colour, gender or disability.

Register your interest

  • Your typical lead time and availability (a rough estimate is absolutely fine)

We’re building a trusted freelance network and will reach out when suitable projects come up.

Due to the volume of interest, we may not be able to respond to every application, but we do review all submissions and will be in touch where there’s a strong match.
