Established in 1997, Halfway Surfacing & Civil Engineering Ltd is a leading, civil engineering and surfacing contractor based in Sheffield. We operate across Yorkshire and throughout the UK, delivering projects including road construction, asphalt surfacing, Section 278 works, carriageways, footways and associated highway infrastructure.

Due to continued growth, we are looking to appoint a Quantity Surveyor with experience in highways, surfacing or road construction to join our expanding commercial team. The role will be primarily office-based, with regular visits to sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities.
  • Identify, analyse, and manage commercial risks.
  • Assist in feasibility studies and understand client requirements.
  • Advise on procurement strategy and assess tender costings.
  • Examine tender documentation to ensure full understanding of scope and requirements.
  • Procure and commercially manage subcontractors and suppliers, working closely with site teams to ensure accurate cost and resource planning.
  • Regularly visit sites and lease with site managers to survey works, take measurements, and collect valuation data.
  • Prepare valuations for interim applications for payment, including variations.
  • Prepare cost reports and manage budgets.
  • Monitor and manage costs, preparing subcontractor payments and negotiating final accounts.
  • Support the site team in documenting and recording completed works.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and main contractor requirements.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrable Quantity Surveying experience within highways, asphalt surfacing, road construction or associated infrastructure works.
  • Experience managing projects commercially from tender stage through to final account.
  • Strong understanding of surfacing specifications, measurements, rates, variations and applications for payment.
  • Experience in forecasting, budget control, cost reporting and commercial risk management.
  • Knowledge of groundworks and general civil engineering would be advantageous.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are essential.
  • Excellent organizational, numerical and communication skills.
  • Full UK driving license.
