The role

As a Lead UX/UI Designer you are passionate about creating user experiences with a real focus on accessibility, usability and cutting-edge UI design. Leading a small, close-knit team of designers, you’ll enjoy a mix of hands-on design as well as using your leadership experience to support the growth and development of your team.

You’ll be an advocate for UX within our digital team, defining guidelines, driving engagement and visibility, and ensuring UX priorities are built into product roadmaps.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the conceptualisation, design, and prototyping of intuitive and engaging user interfaces across Halfords digital brands and products
  • Define UX guidelines and principles in, working with the Senior UX/UI Manager to agree future vision and journeys
  • Establish and maintain the new UI kit to drive consistent execution and look and feel across Designers and projects
  • Advocate for UX, driving engagement and visibility – building confidence and understanding of business objectives across direct reports
  • Line manage, mentor and guide UX/UI designers, providing support with prioritisation of workload to ensure timely delivery of all value stream and business requirements
  • Influence, lobby and ensure UX priorities are built into product roadmaps and value stream plans
  • Reporting of project resource allocation to support accounting and budgeting
  • Oversee reporting and analysis of impact of UX change, and enabling data-driven decision making for the team
  • Lead and challenge the processes around user research and testing methodology to ensure robust, non-bias outcomes
  • Lead rapid iterative “discovery” streams (using various prototyping tools and usability testing) to validate ideas quickly and minimise engineering effort
  • Lead collaborative team processes, such as sprint dependency planning and the weekly design crit

About You

  • Demonstrable experience in UX/UI design across multiple brands, with a strong portfolio showcasing design process, problem-solving skills, and ability to deliver high-quality user experiences
  • Expert in the use of design tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, or similar
  • Experience of using and maintaining design systems
  • Stronger understanding of user-centred design principles and methodologies and best practices
  • Experience with agile methodologies and working in cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively articulate design decisions and rationale
  • Experience of line managing and mentoring UX/UI designers and multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience of using analytical tools to leverage data and drive better design
  • Knowledgeable in accessible design and mindful of designing for different audiences
  • Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and UX/UI design standard
