We have a new role for a Senior Scientist - Mass Spectrometrist in our Analytical Science & Technology Team. The role is a full-time 24 Month Fixed Term Contract/ Secondment opportunity. The Senior Scientist role is to support the Extractable and Leachable work within the team. This team specialises in assessing changes made to the packaging components for our products. Following an assessment of the change you will:
- Identify compounds that extract from the packaging.
- Identify whether these compounds leach into the product.
- Where applicable, develop and validate methods that determine the concentration of the leachables in the product.
This is a practical role that utilises both liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify and quantify components at low concentrations. The role requires close collaboration with packaging scientists, toxicology, and regulatory staff to maintain and grow the business.
Role and ResponsibilitiesWorking in a team of Extractable and Leachable Scientists you will manage several projects that will require the following:
- Perform extractable and leachable risk assessments to support changes in the packaging for products that are in the market.
- Independently, perform extractions of packaging components to be run on advanced instrumentation.
- Independently, quantify extractables and leachables using quadrupole GC-MS and LC-MS instruments.
- Independently, identify extractables and leachables using GC-QToF and LC-QToF MS instrumentation.
- Utilise data from the above techniques to elucidate structures of leachables in products.
- Validate methodology in accordance with ICH Q2 guidelines.
- Identify and quantify the levels of extractables that leach into the products.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Liaising with key customers to define the criteria and timings for analytical development/validation.
- Collaborate with Toxicology and Regulatory departments to provide analytical expertise regarding submissions and to answer questions from Health Authorities.
- Utilise proactive thinking to generate creative solutions to complex technical problems.
- Ability to work in a regulated environment.
University Degree (B.Sc.) or equivalent in a relevant field (Chemistry). Experience in operating and maintaining MS instruments. Knowledge of USP / EP requirements for Extractables and Leachable testing of medicines. Knowledge of ISO10993 guidance for Extractables and Leachable testing for medical devices. Knowledge of FDA and EU guidance for Extractables and Leachable in Food and Cosmetics. Creative and imaginative in approaching diverse projects. Exercises strong degree of technical knowledge to accomplish assigned objectives. Remains focused and prioritises effectively in rapidly changing circumstances. Develops strong collaborative relationships with other departments and fosters a 'one team' approach. Excellent report writing and communication skills. Demonstrated ability in complex and structured problem solving.
Additional/Preferred experience:If you possess the following in addition to the above, it would be a plus:
- A master’s degree or Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a relevant field (Analytical Chemistry).
