Haggerty Jaques is delighted to be exclusively instructed by this major global listed business to recruit a Senior Legal Counsel with an international remit.

The Business

This US listed business is a premier energy and industrial solutions provider with a legacy of over 160 years as a leading distributor of infrastructure products, services and advanced supply chain solutions. Headquartered in Houston, Texas and with an unmatched geographic presence, this is an incredibly interesting and fast paced business to be a part of. It’s also a very exciting time to be joining as the business has recently expanded its international presence.

The Opportunity

Reporting into and assisting the Head of Legal, who is also based in West Yorkshire, the successfully appointed Senior Legal Counsel will have an international remit, with the opportunity to travel where required. You will be working as a commercial business partner rather than simply operating as “a lawyer”, tasked with finding commercial solutions to real business issues.

This is a true full-service in-house role which will see you advising and supporting the business and its stakeholders on a very broad range of matters – mostly commercial contracts but also employment, corporate, compliance and real estate. You will need to be able to pick up whatever comes in, which could be anything from reviewing a low-value purchase order to supporting and advising the business on a multi-million-pound acquisition in another jurisdiction.

You can expect to be supporting on all forms of commercial contracts, corporate and financing transactions, advising on regulatory matters including ESG and trade compliance, real estate including leases, licenses and rent reviews and property sales/purchases, and HR/employment. Whilst you may not have prior experience of every one of these areas, you would need to be willing to develop your expertise and not be fazed by dealing with unique matters for the first time or within foreign jurisdictions.

You will have direct stakeholder contact, including regular interaction with senior individuals right across the business. This is an opportunity to work within a truly dynamic business and to have the latitude to advise on decisions that help to shape the business.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Has a minimum of 6 years’ PQE/practical experience as a qualified lawyer and has spent a significant amount of time in-house.
  • Is a well-rounded in-house lawyer, which must include strong commercial contracts experience but also other areas of the law.
  • Is commercially focused and pragmatic with some international experience.
  • Is motivated by getting the job done regardless of seniority, whether it’s a very simple day-to-day task or a much more complex matter.
  • Is a self-starter with sufficient experience and confidence to make legal and commercial decisions.
  • Enjoys variety, and can be proactive and level-headed.
  • Can work autonomously when required.

What Else Should you Know?

The business has offices in West Yorkshire, the North East of England and Aberdeen from which the successful candidate may work. Some level of remote working may be considered for the right candidate. The business is also open to considering candidates who have significant amounts of practical legal in-house experience but have not formally qualified as a solicitor. Language skills would be welcomed but are not essential.

This is a genuinely fantastic opportunity to work for a major global business, alongside an experienced Head of Legal, in a role that enables you to make a real impact.

Haggerty Jaques is committed to promoting equality and diversity. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of background.
