Role: Senior Development Planner

Location: Newcastle city centre based OR Alnwick, Northumberland

Tenure: Full time permanent (1-day flexible working)

Salary: Between £40-60k (negotiable depending upon experience)

My client is a property management and development company based in the North East of England which manages personal and business interests for the Duke of Northumberland and Percy Family.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Planner to join the in-house Planning Team. The role includes involvement in a wide range of projects from rural small-scale agricultural to strategic urban extension sites, working across a variety of sectors including residential, commercial, renewables, minerals, heritage and conservation, landscape, tourism and leisure.

The role involves working on a wide range of planning applications dealing with statutory authorities and managing consultancy teams, preparing submissions to Local Planning Authorities, and providing planning input and advice across the Estate’s land interests. The work is based largely in the North-East where we have a range of interesting projects to deliver.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare, submit, and manage complex planning applications across a range of areas, including mixed-use, commercial, residential, and renewables.
  • Lead on strategic planning projects and provide internal advice on planning policy and development potential.
  • Conduct site appraisals, feasibility and viability studies, and risk assessments.
  • Draft and review key planning application documents, as well as managing external consultants providing technical input.
  • Involvement across all pre-construction stages of a project, as well as ongoing input to ensure planning compliance throughout construction and operation.
  • Represent the organisation at planning committees, public inquiries, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Liaise with local planning authorities, development partners, and consultancy teams.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UK planning legislation, NPPF, and local planning policies.

Skills & Experience required:

  • Degree in Town Planning or a related field (RTPI-accredited).
  • Chartered Membership of the RTPI (MRTPI).
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience within a planning consultancy, Local Planning Authority, or within the Construction, Property Development or Housing Industry.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing major planning applications from concept stage to decision.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK planning system, legislation, and policy frameworks.
  • Experience with appeals, including written representations, hearings, or inquiries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Public relation skills and confidence in representing the organisation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of the development process.
