24 months Fixed Term/Secondment Opportunity. Hackney is an exciting, diverse and vibrant borough, home to people from all walks of life and where 89 languages are spoken. We have an eclectic mix of housing and one in three households now rents in the private sector. Housing across London is experiencing unprecedented pressure, with rents rocketing as demand increases. In response, Hackney’s Mayor has pledged to tackle poor housing conditions and management practices. The Council is using new powers and expanded licensing schemes to improve standards, helping to ensure that private rented properties across the borough are safe, well managed and properly licensed, contributing to a fair and well-regulated borough.

We have an exciting opportunity for 5x Technical Licensing Officers to join our Property Licensing Team. This is a career-graded role offering development and progression, giving you the chance to make a real difference in improving the lives of residents across Hackney. Reporting to the Principal Licensing Officer, you will support the delivery of Hackney’s property licensing schemes through accurate casework, technical assessment and high-quality customer service. You will work closely with residents, landlords, agents and internal teams to ensure properties are properly licensed and compliant with legislation. Progression from Sc6 to SO1 will be based on demonstrated competence, technical capability, experience and consistent performance at SO1 level.

About you

The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage casework accurately. You will demonstrate empathy and professionalism when dealing with residents and landlords, recognising the impact that poor housing can have on tenants’ health and wellbeing. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will be required to explain licensing requirements clearly in both written and verbal formats, while remaining impartial and evidence-based.

We welcome applications from candidates with solid experience in a private sector housing, licensing, regulatory or enforcement environment, or those with relevant housing, property, or administrative experience who can demonstrate an ability to interpret legislation and apply it in practice.
