Hackney Council is recruiting apprentices for the Building Maintenance Service, providing repairs and maintenance to residents and their properties. The apprenticeship programme offers on‑the‑job training with qualified operatives, college study one day per week or block release, and support through development workshops.

Apprenticeship Roles

  • Apprentice Carpenter (Level 2) – Learn skills to install, repair and maintain doors, windows, locks and associated works in residential, void and public buildings. On successful completion of Level 2, continue to Level 3.
  • Apprentice Electrician (Level 3) – Acquire skills to install, repair and maintain electrical services, including wiring, lighting, power circuits, fault testing and defect repair to support Hackney properties.
  • Apprentice Domestic Gas Engineer (Level 3) – Gain knowledge for commercial gas services, installing boilers, radiators, pipework, servicing, repairs and maintenance of gas appliances, and installing/maintaining air source heat pumps.
  • Plumbing Apprentice (Level 3) – Work on water services, installing and unblocking sinks and toilets, repairing leaks, installing pipework, providing effective plumbing maintenance in council properties.

Eligibility & Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be able to provide evidence of a link to Hackney and meet the educational eligibility criteria.
  • Commit to undertaking a recognised qualification.
  • Show passion, enthusiasm and reliability.
  • Possess good organisational skills and the desire to deliver high‑quality service to residents.
  • Be able to build good working relationships with others.

All successful applicants must be available to start by 1 September 2026.

Application Details

Closing date: Sunday 21 June 2026 at 22:59. Assessments: 6–7 July 2026. Interviews: 20–24 July 2026. Initial assessment (Mathematics and English) will be scheduled for all eligible Level 3 candidates.
