About Us
Home Build Supplies is a long-established, independent Builders Merchants serving London and the Home Counties. With over 30 years in the industry, we pride ourselves on offering a personal, responsive service that larger national merchants often cannot match.
We are looking for a proactive and commercially minded individual who can bring fresh energy to the branch, with the autonomy to influence decisions and drive performance. As we continue to expand, we are now looking to appoint a driven and hands-on Branch Manager to lead our Hackney operation.
The Role
This is a hands-on leadership role where you will take full responsibility for the day-to-day running of the branch, overseeing sales, operations, transport, and yard functions. This position would suit either an experienced Branch Manager or a strong Supervisor/Assistant Manager ready to step up, with a well-rounded background across sales and operations, and a preference for a hands-on environment rather than a purely corporate structure.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and lead the branch team including trade counter staff, drivers, and yard operatives
- Drive sales performance, profitability, and customer retention
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key trade customers
- Oversee order management, scheduling, and delivery coordination
- Monitor stock levels, purchasing, and supplier relationships
- Work closely with credit control to manage customer accounts and minimise risk
- Ensure full compliance with health & safety and operational standards
- Manage staff performance, recruitment, training, and development
- Analyse branch performance and report to senior management
- Identify opportunities to expand the customer base and grow the branch
Requirements
- Experience within a Builders Merchants environment is essential
- Previous supervisory or management experience (Trade Counter Supervisor / Assistant Manager level considered)
- Strong knowledge of building materials and the construction supply chain
- Experience managing teams across sales, yard, and transport functions
- Commercially minded with the ability to drive sales and margin
- Experience using merchant ERP systems (Bistrack/Kerridge preferred)
- Knowledge of purchasing from first- and second-tier suppliers
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities
- High integrity and a hands-on approach to management
What We Offer
- £40,000 salary with performance-based bonus linked to branch performance
- Pension scheme
- Staff discount on building materials
- Genuine opportunity to step up into a Branch Manager role within a growing independent business
- Supportive and collaborative working environment where you will be valued as part of a team and able to see your efforts directly contribute to the success of the business
