You will be supporting residents through life’s most defining milestones—from the joy of a new baby or a wedding to the sensitive moments following a loss. No two days are ever the same, and you will be a calm, professional presence for people when they need it most.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an apprentice, you will perform tasks under supervision as you develop the competence to take on more responsibility. Your daily tasks will include:

  • Legal and Data Administration: Strictly adhering to Registration Acts and GRO guidelines to accurately input data for births, deaths, marriages, and civil partnerships into national systems.
  • Document Management: Producing legal certificates from current and historical records and managing physical archives by retrieving and re-filing historic registers.
  • Digital Organisation: Streamlining digital filing systems, organising electronic records, and guiding customers and residents through online self-service portals.
  • Customer Interaction: Handling sensitive enquiries via telephone, email and face-to-face, ensuring all communication is clear, confidential, and timely.
  • Financial Tasks: Managing transactions by collecting fees for services, issuing receipts, and reconciling payments.
  • Event and Diary Support: Managing the electronic diary for appointments and coordinating bookings for upcoming ceremonies.
  • Ceremony Support: Supporting the team with the administration of citizenship and ceremonies (including weddings and civil partnerships), and acting as an usher to manage the smooth flow of guests during the events.

Eligibility Check

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Linked to Hackney: You must meet a local link, such as being a current resident, a current or former student in the borough within the last eight years, or a Hackney care leaver.
  • Education: You need (or be willing to achieve) GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above in Maths, English, and ICT. You are not eligible if you already hold a Business Administration qualification at Level 3 or higher or a Customer Services qualification at Level 2 or higher. The stated criteria may be waived for individuals with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), a statement of special educational needs (SEN), or a learning difficulty assessment (LDA), as eligibility will be determined case-by-case.

Training Funding Requirements

To access Apprenticeship training funding you must also:

  • Hold a British/EEA passport or have permission from the UK government to live in the UK AND
  • Have been resident in the UK or EEA for at least the last three years. If you are a resident of the EEA, you must have settled or confirmed settled status in the UK.

You must be able to evidence that you meet the eligibility criteria. Please ensure that you have read the eligibility criteria in the Job Description & Person Specification. You will not be eligible if you cannot provide this evidence.
