Our Principal Data Engineers are responsible for leading and delivering strategically significant, complex client engagements across our portfolio of clients. They are expected to bring a thorough understanding of client needs, strong discipline skills, subject‑matter expertise and excellent leadership to inspire delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with clients to understand their needs, provide solution advice as a trusted advisor and shape solutions that leverage Made Tech's wider capabilities.
  • Assess project performance, quality‑assure deliverables and ensure client satisfaction.
  • Coach and mentor team members to achieve engagement outcomes and develop their careers.
  • Act as Technical Authority of the Data & AI capability, ensuring alignment with internal and industry best practices and using engagement experience to improve standards.
  • Participate in business development activities, including bids and pre‑sales, and coach teams on proposal contributions.
  • Undertake people‑management responsibilities, including performance reviews and professional development for engagement and practice colleagues.
  • Serve as a thought leader within Made Tech, our account engagements and the wider public sector, and represent the company at industry events.

The right person for this role will combine technical discipline, leadership skills, and industry networking with Made Tech's experience delivering digital services and transformation in the public sector.

Clients

  • Understanding the issues and challenges that the public sector faces in delivering services that make the best use of data and digital capabilities.
  • Innovate by applying learnings from the commercial sector, other countries, and advances in technology to UK public sector challenges.
  • Build trusted advisor relationships with senior client stakeholders within the public sector.

Leadership

  • Build and lead high‑performing consulting teams, creating leveraged engagements to deliver cost‑effective, profitable, successful client outcomes.
  • Lead bids and solution shaping to produce compelling proposals that help win new business and grow the industry.
  • Manage third‑party partnerships and suppliers to provide a consolidated and seamless delivery team to clients.

Practice

  • Deliver complex engagements spanning multiple capabilities for user‑facing digital and data services in the public sector.
  • Identify opportunities based on client needs and develop targeted solutions to progress development of the opportunity.
  • Work with sales professionals and hold commercial responsibility for strategic organisational goals.

Data Engineering

  • Maintain a broad technical knowledge of modern data practices and shape data strategy and roadmaps.
  • Work directly with customers and users within a technology consultancy.
  • Shape data strategy and approaches to quality, ethics and governance.
  • Develop data capability or function.
  • Combine data science, analytics and engineering.
  • Understand various architectures including data warehouses, data lakes, lake houses and data mesh.
  • Apply best practice DataOps and MLOps.
  • Stay updated on data engineering technologies such as Apache Spark, Databricks and Hadoop.
  • Practice agile ways of working.
  • Understand programming languages including Python, Scala, R and SQL.
  • Know databases and cloud‑based datastores including SQL and NoSQL.
  • Understand cloud platforms such as AWS and/or Azure and their data offerings.
  • Commit to self‑development as a keen learner.

Eligibility for SC

Many of our customers require a minimum SC (security check) clearance. Successful candidates must have eligibility requiring 5 years of continuous UK residency. If during the interview process it is evident that you may not be eligible for SC, the application will let you know and we will not progress further.
