About the Role

Hackajob is collaborating with Barclays to connect candidates with opportunities in a standalone Payments Acquiring business that embraces a fintech culture from our new London offices alongside our Brookfield partners.

The role is based in London at 1 Churchill Place and 7 Westferry Circus (new BPL office).

This position is a Staff Software Engineer who will play a key role in improving how we build, deploy and run software, lead technical delivery, support and guide other engineers, and help establish practical standards that make development simpler and more reliable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development and delivery of high‑quality software solutions by using industry‑aligned programming languages, frameworks and tools, ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable and optimised for performance.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration with product managers, designers and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participation in code reviews, promotion of a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Staying informed of industry technology trends and innovations, actively contributing to the organisation’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability and reliability.
  • Assisting in planning resources, budgets and policies, delivering continuous improvements and escalating breaches of policies and procedures.
  • Guiding technical direction as a subject‑matter expert, training and coaching less experienced specialists and providing information affecting long‑term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions.
  • Advising key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross‑functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Managing and mitigating risks through assessment, supporting the control and governance agenda.
  • Developing solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought, conducting in‑depth analysis with interpretative thinking to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Building and maintaining trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
  • Technical Skills & Experience
  • Deep expertise in backend engineering and building large‑scale distributed systems within a cloud environment (preferably AWS, Azure or GCP).
  • Expertise in Java, Kotlin, Scala or a similar JVM language.
  • Data layer expertise: experience with both SQL (Postgre SQL, My SQL) and No SQL (Mongo DB, Dynamo DB, Redis) databases, and understanding when to use each.
  • Experience with AI technologies or machine‑learning integration.
  • Experience in Fin Tech, Payments, scaling technology or start‑up domains.
  • Knowledge of Rust for systems programming and performance‑critical services.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Helm and cloud‑native deployment strategies.
  • Front‑end skills with React, Type Script and state‑management libraries.
  • Observability experience, including monitoring, logging and tracing tools.
  • CI/CD expertise, with experience in automated deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code and Git Ops practices.
  • Proficiency in messaging technologies (Kafka, Rabbit MQ, SQS, NATS) and event‑driven architecture patterns.
  • API design experience, with a proven track record designing and implementing RESTful and/or Graph QL APIs that scale.

Work Environment

The successful candidate will be based in London.

We support a hybrid working pattern with three days per week in office.

The team operates an on‑call rota, so weekend and evening work may be required on occasion.
