Join Barclays as a Workload Automation Engineer, playing a critical role in supporting and enhancing an infrastructure that underpins the bank’s batch processing and automation capabilities. In this role, you will help manage and evolve a platform executing over 3 million jobs daily, ensuring stability, resilience, and compliance for business‑critical workflows used across Markets, RFT, and wider global technology teams. You will contribute to key initiatives such as platform upgrades, agent migrations, improved observability through AAI, and the development of automation solutions to reduce manual effort.

Please note that the role may include participation in an on‑call rota (approximately once every four weeks) as the platform moves into production, as well as occasional out‑of‑hours or weekend work aligned to major implementation activities.

To be successful in this role:

  • Familiarity with scheduling tools.
  • Experience with source control systems such as GitLab.
  • Strong communication skills.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Administrative experience with scheduling tools, preferably AutoSys.
  • Solid understanding of enterprise scheduler logic and best practices.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Chef or Ansible.
  • Experience with secrets management tools such as CyberArk or HashiCorp Vault.

Purpose of the role:

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities:

  • Development and delivery of high‑quality software solutions by using industry‑aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
  • Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimised for performance.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration with product managers, designers and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participation in code reviews, and promoting a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Staying informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contributing to the organisation’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability and reliability.
