Barclays is expanding its UK engineering presence as part of our 2026 technology growth strategy, and we are looking for a remarkable Java Software Engineer to join our Digital Feature Engineering team. This team is at the heart of delivering best‑in‑class experiences across our Mobile App and Retail Online Banking platforms. You’ll work within our Core App & Web group, contributing to high‑performing backend services that power millions of customer interactions every day. This is a hands‑on engineering role focused on building robust, scalable Java applications within a complex and evolving digital ecosystem.

To be successful as a Java Software Engineer, you should have:

  • Experience in Java software development within enterprise‑scale or highly complex environments.
  • Previous experience with Test Driven Development (TDD) and a commitment to engineering best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to confidently work within large, unfamiliar, and legacy codebases.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high‑quality software solutions by using industry‑aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
  • Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimised for performance.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participation in code reviews, and promotion of a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organisation’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
