The role As part of the Integrated Engineering Team South Central, you will play a key role in delivering data improvement programmes that support the sustainable management of Natural Resources Wales’ flood risk assets.

Your work will help ensure that the information we rely on to manage and maintain vital flood defences is accurate, accessible and fit for purpose.

Working collaboratively with the national Flood Risk Management Assets Team and operational colleagues across Wales, you’ll help drive improvements in data quality, consistency and reliability.

By turning complex asset information into meaningful insights, you’ll support better decision-making, improve operational efficiency and contribute to the effective management of flood risk for communities across Wales.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with data, building strong relationships and making a tangible difference through their work.

You will be part of a supportive and knowledgeable team, helping to shape and enhance the data that underpins the management of critical infrastructure and environmental resilience.

A valid driving licence is essential for this role as the successful candidate will be required to regularly travel between multiple sites to collect and verify on-the-ground data.

This includes gathering accurate, real-world information to ensure the AMX system remains up to date and reflective of current conditions.

You must hold a full and current UK driving license.

You will be contracted to the NRW office at the above location and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment.

Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

What you will do

  • Organising and delivering work packages within the national asset management programme.
  • Carrying out tactical tasks using the AMX Flood database, as well as maintaining and updating GIS datasets.
  • Supporting operational teams by providing high-quality data that enables informed decision-making during site evaluations and programme delivery.
  • Contributing to technical advice, programme monitoring and reporting.
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Deliver tactical work in flood risk asset management programmes, mainly using the FRM assets database ‘AMX Flood’.
  • Maintain and improve GIS data and ensure operational teams have reliable data to carry out site evaluation in the delivery of operational programmes.
  • Deliver technical advice for specific sector or technical issues, focussing on data improvement to our ‘AMX Flood’ database.
  • Contribute to improving our flood asset data in spatial environments using GIS tools.
  • Deliver work plans, and delivery of agreed actions to contribute to business planning.
  • Participate in NRW technical groups in relation to the AMX Flood database.
  • Interact with colleagues across NRW to promote consistent industry and specialist subject practices.
  • Supervise and mentor less experienced colleagues.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post
  • Be committed to Natural Resources Wales Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post
  • Be committed to your own development through the effective use of your personal development plan (known as Sgwrs).
  • Required to take part in incident response activities.

  • Your Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge And Skills
  • Hold a recognised qualification in data management, computing or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working with large data sets in data management environments, such as AMX.
  • Experience of interrogating linked SQL database tables to analyse data.
  • An understanding of asset management principles.
  • Analytical thinking skills, and experience of using data analysis tools e. g. Excel, Power BI and others.
  • Have a thorough understanding of computer systems and applications.
  • Welsh Language level requirements
  • Essential: Level A1 - Entry level
  • Welsh language levels

Additional Information

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

Natural Resources Wales is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.

Although we hold a Skilled Worker visa sponsorship licence, it applies only to specific roles that meet both the eligibility criteria and salary requirements set out by the UK Government under the Skilled Worker visa route.
