hackajob is partnering directly with Verisk Analytics to hire for this role. This is a hands-on technical leadership position, combining people management, cloud architecture, platform engineering, and strategic decision-making. Reporting to the Head of Software, you'll lead a distributed infrastructure team spanning the UK and India while working closely with engineering teams to deliver scalable, resilient, and secure cloud solutions. The position is open for full remote within the UK, but there’s preference for profiles who are commutable to Bath weekly; our hybrid policy establishes 3 days per week in the office.

You’ll provide technical direction across two business units, with a primary focus on Maplecroft's AWS-based platforms, including:

  • GRiD: Maplecroft's current flagship risk analytics platform, comprising a microservice architecture for mapping, commodity-specific and industry-specific data, and core country risk data.
  • DataX: Maplecroft's internal platform for large-scale data processing, building and quality-assuring the risk indices that feed our client-facing products.
  • GRiD2: Maplecroft's next-generation risk analytics platform, which will replace GRiD as our flagship SaaS product for risk management. GRiD 2 is built on Synergy Studio (VSS), a platform owned by our parent business unit, Catastrophe and Risk Solutions.

Working within a modern cloud ecosystem leveraging AWS, AWS CDK, OpenTofu, ECS Fargate, Lambda, DynamoDB, Aurora, Batch, Step Functions, GitHub and Okta, you'll help guide architectural decisions, support platform modernisation, and drive engineering excellence.

Why Join Us? This is an opportunity to influence the future of industry-leading risk analytics platforms while remaining deeply involved in technical decision-making. You'll work with modern AWS technologies, help shape engineering strategy, lead talented engineers, and contribute to the development of the next generation of Maplecroft's products in a collaborative, innovation-focused environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the GRiD cloud platform end-to-end, including resilience, disaster recovery, multi-region architecture, and operational readiness.
  • Act as the senior escalation point for complex infrastructure challenges, including permissions, deployment failures, and platform stability issues.
  • Guide the transition from GRiD to GRiD 2, collaborating with the Catastrophe and Risk Solutions teams who develop Synergy Studio (VSS), the platform on which GRiD 2 is being built, to ensure a successful migration.
  • Shape platform strategy and governance, providing guidance on architecture, tooling, and engineering best practices across AWS CDK and OpenTofu environments.
  • Partner regularly with the Information Risk Officer to identify, prioritise, and remediate platform vulnerabilities.
  • Remain actively involved in engineering work through code reviews, technical problem solving, and hands-on development when required.
  • Drive innovation through prototyping, self-service infrastructure, developer tooling improvements, and AI-assisted development initiatives.
  • Support agile delivery activities and contribute to a shared business-hours support rota.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a distributed team of infrastructure engineers through coaching, performance management, and career development.

Qualifications

Essential Minimum

  • 5 years' experience working on customer-facing cloud platforms.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with AWS across multiple accounts and regions, including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments.
  • Proven experience with both AWS CDK/CloudFormation and OpenTofu, including troubleshooting stack failures, rollbacks, and configuration drift.
  • Experience building or operating serverless AWS architectures, particularly for production-scale data processing workloads.
  • Experience designing and supporting multi-region, highly available platforms, including disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Strong understanding of AWS IAM, including roles, trust policies, and GitHub Actions OIDC federation.
  • Professional development experience in Python.
  • Excellent code review capabilities, providing pragmatic and constructive technical feedback.
  • Demonstrated passion for continuous improvement, including developer experience, automation, AI-assisted engineering, and platform tooling.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction.
  • Prior people management experience is highly desirable, although we welcome applications from exceptional senior engineers ready to take the next step into leadership.

Desirable

  • Experience with Okta or similar identity and access management platforms.
  • Familiarity with Django and/or FastAPI.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Sentry Cloud, Dynatrace, or similar platforms.
  • Experience working with distributed engineering teams across multiple geographies.
