Core Duties:

  • Designing new and/or developing existing electro/mechanical designs relating to torpedo products.
  • Produce technical documentation in line with company guidelines and deliver mechanical design presentations in design review discussions and supplier/stakeholder meetings.
  • Perform established analysis techniques (structural/thermal) and conduct mechanical tests to confirm compliance with design requirements.
  • Apply existing knowledge in the selection and development of appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques.
  • Have an understanding of the Engineering LCM process and assist Engineering Governance and Requirements Capture activities.
  • Establish and build positive working relationships with different engineering disciplines and competencies within the business, supplier and stakeholder communities in order to improve performance of the business.
  • Undertake continuous professional development as required in order to build own skill, knowledge and competence within the discipline.

Essential Skills:

  • You will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and have an understanding of mathematical and engineering first principles.
  • You will be able to apply problem solving skills and contribute expertise in Mechanical Engineering principles for providing design solutions.
  • You will have a good all round Mechanical Engineering capability and an interest in developing a specialist skill (structural/thermal).
  • You will have attained or be working towards IEng/CEng status.

The Torpedo's Mechanical Engineering team:

The mechanical engineering team's primary role is to support the new development opportunities and in-service support of heavyweight and lightweight torpedoes for the UK Royal Navy and export customers. The team are involved in many phases of the engineering lifecycle from concept development, detailed design and disposal activities of torpedo hardware and items of support and test equipment used for integration and maintenance. Skills, knowledge and experience of the team include specialist mechanical design, build, test, trials activities and systems engineering support to the wider enterprise, enabling a close working relationship with all stakeholders and organisations involved in the support of the UK torpedo programmes.
