Step into publishing at a historic independent publisher and help develop books through editorial support, proofreading and copywriting. Established in 1843, Batsford is one of the oldest independent trade publishers in the UK. For nearly two hundred years we have excelled in publishing beautiful, well-designed books that encourage and celebrate art, culture and creativity.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking editorial assistant to work with us at Batsford. This is an entry-level role, so while the right candidate will be knowledgeable and passionate about our books and the book trade more widely, we see this as your first step into a publishing career. We expect that you’re eager to learn and ready to become an essential part of our busy team.

Key responsibilities

  • You will support our team of editors and designers with a mix of editorial and administrative tasks, including (but not limited to):
  • Working closely with the Editorial Directors and Commissioning Editor across their lists, taking an interest in all aspects of books and their publishing
  • Preparing cover copy, cover briefs, catalogue copy, metadata and more
  • Editorial work, such as proofreading covers and checking reprints
  • Maintaining excellent relationships with internal teams and with authors, agents and the wider book community
  • Assisting at book launch events as required
  • Coordinating and circulating agendas, minutes and action points after meetings
  • Processing submissions and maintaining a submissions log
  • Handling post and couriers including author copies
  • Overseeing our programme of reprints
  • Managing copyright permissions for text and picture requests
  • Handling contracts and invoices
